Rhinopoma lepsianum Peters, 1859
Peters, W.C.H. (1859) Über die Chiropterengattung Nyctophilus . Monatsberichte der Königlich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1859: 222 [221–225].
Valid name: Rhinopoma microphyllum (Brünnich, 1782)
Lectotype (designated by Kock 1969: 54, 57): ZMB 2578 View Materials , body in alcohol, skull extracted (by D. Kock in the 1960s), male, adult; White Nile, Sudan; collected by Lepsius,? 1844.
Paralectotype (here designated): uncatalogued (old number = A 3243), skull only, no locality, date or collector (originally labelled lepsianum).
Comment: In contrast to the original description, which gives Blue Nile, the lectotype label gives the White Nile [ Sudan] as the type locality [ Kock 1969: 54, 57]. Peters compared a skull of this taxon with one of R. hardwickii Gray, 1831 [which was misidentified as R. microphyllum ]. However, the skull of ZMB 2578 was extracted much later by Kock (1969: 57) for examination. It is very likely, that the skull ZMB A 3243 is the specimen used by Peters for comparison. During the present investigation no further specimen of lepsianum could be detected at ZMB; the latter specimen is considered to be a paralectotype.
