Rhopobota projecta Zhang View in CoL , sp. nov.
Figs. 1, 3 View FIGURES 1 – 5
Diagnosis. Rhopobota projecta is superficially similar to R. latispina Zhang & Li , but it can be distinguished by the uncus being short and narrow; the neck of the valva with a small triangular projection before the cucullus; and the ventral margin of the cucullus without a group of spiniform setae. In R. latispina the uncus is horn-shaped, narrower at apex and bending outward; the neck of the valva lacks a triangular projection before the cucullus; and a group of spiniform setae are located along the ventral margin of the cucullus.
Description. Adult ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ). Head: Vertex with grayish brown scales, frons white. Antenna brown. Labial palpus grayish brown laterally, second segment with gray scales apically, third segment small, gray and porrect. Thorax: Dorsum including tegulae grayish brown. Foreleg brown; midleg dark gray, tibia and tarsus with brown scales; hindleg gray, with brown scales on tarsus. Forewing length 5.0–6.0 mm; upperside ground color gray; basal and subbasal fasciae fused to form a large, pale brown basal patch, extending from costal to 1/3–2/5 of dorsum, protruding medially on outer margin; median fascia pale brown, extending from middle of costa to before tornus; ocellus silvery, nearly rectangular, crossed by brown parallel striae; costa with nine pairs of white strigulae from base to apex: strigulae 1 and 2 indistinct; strigulae 3 and 4 conspicuous, between base and intersection of Sc and costa; strigulae 5 and 6 between Sc and R1; distal three pairs distinct, distributed between veins R1–R2, R2–R3, and R3–R4; cilia grayish brown. Hindwing and cilia dark gray. Abdomen: Male genitalia ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ) with paired processes of uncus widely separated, short clubbed; socius small, triangular, setose, near dorsum of tegumen. Valva broad at base, a tuft of hair at outer edge of basal opening; neck distinct, about 2/3 as wide as base of valva, with a small triangular projection before cucullus; cucullus oblong, setose, with small marginal spiniform setae, rounded dorsally. Phallus broad and short; cornuti numerous, spiculate. Female unknown.
Holotype. ♂, CHINA: Zhejiang Province: Qingliangfeng (30.07°N, 118.51°E), Shunxiwu , 390 m, 18.v.2012, L. Yang & Z. Zhang, genitalia slide no. ZAH15053. Paratypes. 1♂, same data as holotype, 19.v.2012; 2♂, Zhejiang Province: Qingliangfeng, Longtangshan, 390–500 m, 21.v.2012, L. Yang & Z. Zhang. GoogleMaps
Distribution. This species is known only from Zhejiang, China.
Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin projectus = projecting, referring to the small triangular projection ventrally before the cucullus of the valva in the male genitalia.
