Müller Argoviensis (1866: 1158) .— Stillingia linearifolia (Torr.) Small (1903: 704) , nom. illeg,. non Watson (1879: 297). Lectotype (here designated):— UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Texas: ravines on the San Pedro river and on limestone rocks higher up on the Rio Grande, A. C. V. Schott s.n (NY!, isolectotype US 00096697!). [= Stillingia texana Johnston (1923: 91) ].

Sapium sylvaticum var. linearifolium was described by Torrey (1859) based on the specimens collected in “ Ravines on the San Pedro river and on limestone rocks higher up on the Rio Grande; Schott, Bigelow ”, without indicating the herbarium where they were deposited. Specimens of these collections were found in NY and US. The collection of Schott in NY was chosen as lectotype since it presents flowers and fruits, and also because NY is one of the main institutions housing types studied by John Torrey.
