This variety was described in the same publication as S. velenovskyi Cheshm. , where Cheshmedjiev (1969: 474) gave complete information on the type specimen: “ Montes Stara Planina, supra urbem Karlovo, in locis lapidosis. Leg. I. Cheshmedjiev, 25 IX 1967, SOA ”. However, it was not possible to find such a holotype specimen in the SOA herbarium, which is probably missing. Other original material for S. heuffelii var. bulgaricum was not found.
