Senecio santanderensis (Cuatrecasas) Cuatrecasas (1950: 45) View in CoL . Culcitium santanderense Cuatrecasas (1942: 28 View in CoL , tab. 3), syn. nov. Type:— COLOMBIA. Cordillera Oriental; Departamento de Santander: Páramo del Almorzadero, vertiente N, 3800 m alt., 28 Nov 1941, J. Cuatrecasas 13527 (holotype: COL 000005439!; isotypes: F 0049334F!, F 0076988F!, BC 634970!, BC 624141!, US 00122838!).

Distribution and Habitat ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ): — Senecio cocuyanus is endemic to Colombia, in páramos at elevations of 3200– 4500 m.

Note: — Senecio santanderensis is here treated as a synonym of S. cocuyanus ; after having observed type materials and general collection for the species, we found specimens with ambiguous assignment to the species (e.g. Carlson 3 and Diaz-Piedrahita 99). Cuatrecasas distinguished both species by its indument (whiter and tenuous in S. santanderensis , yellowish white and denser in S. cocuyanus ), habit slender in S. santanderenis (vs robust in S. cocuyanus ), oblong-lanceolate leaves (vs. oblong-spathulate in S. cocuyanus ), shorter corollas (8–9 mm in S. santanderensis , 9–12 mm in S. cocuyanus ) and shorter pappus (8–9 mm vs. 10–12 S. cocuyanu s). These features are not constant and appear in different combinations in the specimens, making the species delimitation unclear.
