Lips (Lips-499); female on slide, China, Sichuan, Han He Ba, Gan Chuan Dong (cave), 6 August 1999, coll. J. Lips (Lips-424) .

Description

Body length up to 2.64 mm. Body white.

Antenna 2.1–2.5 times as long as cephalic diagonal. Antennal segments ratio as I: II: III: IV = 1: 2.0–2.1: 2.0: 3.8–4.0. Antennal chaetae mainly with six types: (1) ciliate, pointed chaetae, long or short; apically pointed ( Figure 1A View Figure 1 , chaetae 2–3) or truncate ( Figure 1A View Figure 1 , chaeta 1); (2) smooth straight chaetae long (about three on Ant. I, three internal, two ventral on Ant. II, and one ventral at base of Ant. III; Figure 1A View Figure 1 , chaeta 4) or short ( Figure 1A View Figure 1 , chaeta 5); (3) smooth spiny microchaetae at base of antennae (three dorsal, three ventral on Ant. I, one internal, one external and one ventral on Ant. II; Figure 1A View Figure 1 , chaeta 6); (4) slightly curved, thin sensilla (few on Ant. I and many on other three segments; Figure 1A View Figure 1 , chaeta 7); (5) thick, short sensilla (two dorsal on distal Ant. II, few on distal Ant. III; Figure 1A View Figure 1 , chaeta 8); (6) short, thin ordinary or sensory chaetae on Ant. I–IV ( Figure 1A View Figure 1 , chaeta 9). Ant. III organ with chaetae 2 & 3 rod-like, chaetae 1, 5 and 8 shorter than 2 ( Figure 1B View Figure 1 ) .

Eyes absent. Lateral process of labial palp straight, thicker than normal chaetae, with tip just reaching apex of labial papilla ( Figure 1C View Figure 1 ). Subapical chaeta of maxillary outer lobe subequal to apical one; three smooth sublobal hairs on maxillary outer lobe ( Figure 1D View Figure 1 ). Labial chaetae as MREL 1 L 2; chaeta R ciliate, 0.5 length of chaeta M; chaetae X, X 2 and X 4 ciliate; chaeta X 3 smooth ( Figure 1E View Figure 1 ). Dorsal cephalic chaetotaxy with five sutural (S) and four macrochaetae in Gr. II ( Figure 1F View Figure 1 ).

Thoracic chaetotaxy shown in Figure 1G View Figure 1 . Th. II with three (m1, m2, m2i) mediomedial, three medio-lateral (m4, m4i, m4p), 21–29 posterior macrochaetae and three s-chaetae; p3p and p4p (found in one specimen) rarely present. Th. III with 28–32 macrochaetae and two lateral s-chaetae; macrochaetae p2ep and p3ip2 rarely absent.

Trochanteral organ with 17–27 smooth spiny chaetae; 8–11 in arms and 9–16 between them ( Figure 1H View Figure 1 ). Inner differentiated tibiotarsal chaetae ciliate with ciliations moderately appressed to axis ( Figure 1I View Figure 1 ); inner outstanding macrochaeta located at about 0.33 distance from base, ciliate and tapered at tip ( Figure 1J View Figure 1 ). Unguis with two tiny inner paired teeth at 0.25 distance from base; distal unpaired tooth absent. Unguiculus truncate and outer edge with several tiny teeth. Tenent hair pointed ( Figure 1K, L View Figure 1 ) or clavate (found in two specimens among 10; Figure 1M View Figure 1 ), subequal to unguiculus in length.

Abd. IV 5.0–6.8 times as Abd. III in length along dorsal midline. Abdominal chaetotaxy shown in Figure 2A View Figure 2 . Abd. I with 7–8 macrochaetae and two s-chaetae; a5i often absent. Abd. II with four (a3, m3, m3e, m3ep) central, one (m5) lateral macrochaetae and two s-chaetae. Abd. III with one (m3) central, three lateral (am6, pm6, p6) macrochaetae and three s-chaetae. Abd. IV with five central (A3–4, A6, B5, C1?), six lateral macrochaetae (F1, E2p, E2–4, D3) and about 17 s-chaetae. Abd. V with three s-chaetae ( Figure 2B View Figure 2 ). Tenaculum with 4 + 4 teeth and one large striate chaeta ( Figure 2C View Figure 2 ). Ventral tube anteriorly with 9 + 9 ciliate chaetae ( Figure 2D View Figure 2 ); posteriorly with about 20 chaetae, one of them obviously ciliate; each lateral flap with seven smooth and 1–2 ciliate chaetae ( Figure 2E View Figure 2 ). Manubrium and base of dens with a row of thick, finely ciliate chaetae near lateral margin ( Figure 2F View Figure 2 ). Manubrial plaque with two pseudopores and 5–8 ciliate chaetae ( Figure 2G View Figure 2 ). Distal smooth part of dens subequal to mucro in length. Mucro bidentate with basal spine long, its tip not reaching apex of apical tooth ( Figure 2H View Figure 2 ).

Ecology

Troglobiont, only found in cave habitat.

Etymology

Named after the collector Josiane Lips.

Remarks

Sinella lipsae sp. nov. can be easily distinguished from other known Sinella species by claw structure, mucro, dorsal cephalic and body chaetotaxy. It is most similar to S. trogla Chen & Christiansen, 1993 in tiny teeth on claw, ciliate inner differentiated tibiotarsal chaetae and chaetotaxy of Abd. I, III and V; it differs from the latter in absence of unpaired inner tooth on unguis, slightly shorter mucronal basal spine, ciliate chaeta R and smooth chaeta X 3 on ventral side of the head, presence of sets of p4 on Th. II, a3 on Abd. II, modified chaetae on manubrium and abundant ciliate chaetae on manubrial plaque.
