Figs. 10 View FIGURES 7–12 , 41 View FIGURES 39–47 , 64 View FIGURES 61–78
Diagnosis. Sparganothoides amitana is most similar to S. machimiana , but S. amitana is conspicuously smaller; it is the smallest species of the group. The aedeagus of S. amitana is about equal in length to the phallobase, whereas in S. machimiana the aedeagus is proportionally much shorter and wider. The female genitalia of S. amitana are characterized by a lightly sclerotized, narrow, gently curved sterigma.
Description. Male. Head: Frons grayish white, smooth scaled; vertex roughened, white-tipped brownish gray scaling. Labial palpus white mesally, with white-tipped brownish gray scaling laterally. Antennal scaling brownish gray and white. Thorax: Dorsum smooth scaled, brownish gray. Forewing length 8.2 mm (n = 1). Forewing ground color grayish white mixed with light brownish gray and a light scattering of brown-tipped gray scales, few brown transverse strigulae in subterminal and terminal areas, some brown spots at costa, brown spot at apex of discal cell. Fringe grayish white. Hindwing grayish white with gray transverse strigulae throughout, most dense in apical region. Abdomen: Gentialia ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 7–12 ; slide #JJK102; SDNHM; Mexico, Jalisco, Río Verde, 17 mi S Yahualica Hwy 116; n = 1) with uncus long, slender, uniform in width, elbowed at nearly 90° angle at two-thirds distance from base, with sparse long setae dorsally and patch of small setae ventrally; tegumen raised and rounded at base of uncus; socius subtriangular posteriorly, secondary arms long, slender, abruptly angled near middle, enlarged apices asymmetrically lobed; transtilla moderately bilobed, spines short, numerous over most of posterior margin, anterior process without invagination at middle; valva subrectangular with sclerotized curved crease connecting to near base of sacculus and extending over two thirds of valva, sacculus straight, costa curved inward at base, pulvinus reduced; phallus pistol-shaped, aedeagus slightly curved dorsally and more sharply curved ventrally, subequal to length of phallobase, attenuate apically, attached to juxta by a thin process; cornuti with a minute spine near base.
Female. Head, Thorax: Essentially as described for male but forewing more strongly marked. Forewing length 8.4 mm (n = 1). Abdomen: Genitalia ( Fig. 41 View FIGURES 39–47 ; slide #JJK044; SDNHM; Mexico, Jalisco, Río Verde, 17 mi S Yahualica Hwy 116; n = 1) with papillae anales parallel-sided, rounded posteriorly; sterigma lightly sclerotized ventrally, slightly curved; ductus bursae short, widening anteriorly; corpus bursae large, irregularly rounded; signum more than three times longer than wide, curved, lobed near ends on inside of curve, weakly pointed at apices.
Type material. Holotype: Male: MEXICO: JALISCO: Río Verde , 17 mi S Yahualica Hwy 116, 14.ix.1986, D. Faulkner ( SDNHM).
Paratype (1♀). MEXICO: JALISCO: Río Verde , 17 mi S Yahualica Hwy 116, 14.ix.1986 (1♀), D. Faulkner ( SDNHM) .
Immature stages. Unknown
Etymology. The name is derived from the Latin “amita” (= paternal aunt) and is intended to reflect the close relationship to S. machimiana .
