Type species: Stegomyia desmotes Giles, 1904 .

Subgenus Xyele includes the species placed in the Desmotes Subgroup of Huang (1977a). The subgroup was described on pages 25–26 and this taxonomic information now forms the description of the subgenus. Additional character information in support of the subgenus is provided in Appendix 1 of the present paper. Information and illustrations were also provided by Mattingly (1965). Reinert (2000g) illustrated the female genitalia of St. desmotes and provided a description of the female genitalia for the subgenus (as Desmotes Assemblage). Matsuo et al. (1974) described and illustrated the egg.
