Syrphus fasciventris Rondani, 1851 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1851: 360.
TYPE LOCALITY: “ regioni equatoriali dell’America, principalmente nelle vicinanze del Rio Napo ” [ Equatorial regions of ( South ) America, mainly in the vicinity of Napo River] ( Rondani 1851: 357) .
TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study.
CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Thompson et al. 1976: 39).
REMARKS: Rondani (1851: 360) described Syrphus fasciventris from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material collected by Osculati (1850) during his journey through equatorial South America. Osculati (1850: 240) named but did not describe the species. Leonardi et al. (1995: 148) and Mazzotti (2011: 166) reported the Osculati collection in Milan as destroyed. We also did not find any material during this study.
