ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1850c: 192.
TYPE LOCALITY: “ Carolina [Carolina ( North America )]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype ( MRSN: Box 1755): Tabanus L. cheliopterus Rndn. , ♀, Carolina / Tabanus cheliopterus Rond. 1850: 192 , Carolina.
CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Philip 1950: 304, 1965b: 333).
REMARKS: Rondani (1850c: 192) described Tabanus cheliopterus from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received from E. Truqui. We found one syntype in this study.
