Diagnosis. Tasmosalpingus quadrispilotus can be easily distinguished from the new species by its distinct colour pattern on the elytra and the coarser and usually seriate punctation on the dorsal surface ( Fig. 1 ). Tasmosalpingus magnus is monochrome with fine and irregular punctation on the dorsum. Other distinguishing characters are: the lateral pronotal expansion narrowed anteriorly (distinctly expanded anteriorly in T. magnus ) ( Figs 2C , 4C ), the procoxal rests on the mesoventrite well separated (contiguous in T. magnus ) ( Figs 2G , 4G ), metaventrite about 0.55 times as long as wide (0.64 in T. magnus ); the aedeagal parameres separated at apex and the flagellum of about 1.3 times as long as basal struts (parameres only shallowly incised at apex and flagellum of male genitalia about 1.7 times as long as basal struts in T. magnus ) ( Figs 2N , 4N ). The female of T. quadrispilotus can be distinguished by the ovipositor with the styli distinctly shorter than the distal gonocoxites, which are almost equal in length in T. magnus ( Figs 2L , 4L ).

Distribution. Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales.

Remarks. Lea (1919) described T. quadrispilotus and T. promiscuus citing the differences in the colour patterns and punctation on the elytra ( Figs 1D, 1E ). We have examined several series of specimens collected from localities in Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales, and have found considerable variation in colour patterns and punctation among the specimens collected from the same locality ( Figs 1A–I ). In addition, the male genitalia of specimens exhibiting different colour patterns and punctation have been found to be identical. Consequently, T. promiscuus is here recognized as a junior synonym of T. quadrispilotus .
