Teleopsis longiscopium Rondani, 1875 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1875c: 444.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Insula Bonae Fortunae (Borneo) , Provincia Sarawak [ Bona Fortuna Island, Sarawak Province, Borneo]” ( Rondani 1875c: 421).

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, lectotype (in poor condition, missing head) ( MSNG): Borneo, Sarawak, 1865/1866, Coll. Doria / Typus / Teleopsis longiscopium Rond. / Teleopsis longiscopium , n° 40 / Teleopsis longiscopium / Teleopsis belzebuth (Bigot) , ♂, det. Feijen, 2004 / T. belzebuth (Bigot, 1874) , identification H.R. Feijen, 2004 / synonyms discrepans (Walker in part) fallax Bigot longiscopium Rondani.

PARALECTOTYPE NOT EXAMINED: 1 ♂ (missing eyes, left fore- and mid-legs) ( MZUF: Box 72): Teleopsis longiscopium n. / Sarawak / [no identification number].

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Teleopsis discrepans (Walker, 1856) ( Steyskal 1977c: 34) ; junior synonym of Teleopsis belzebuth (Bigot, 1874) ( Feijen 1998: 51) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1875c: 444) described Teleopsis longiscopium , without specifying either the number or the sex, but giving a single measurement of length, despite there being two specimens in the type series found in this study, from material collected by G. Doria and O. Beccari. Guiglia (1957: 197) reported a “ holotype ” in the MSNG without knowing of an additional male in the MZUF, which brings the original type series to two specimens. In his original description Rondani did not explicitly refer to a single specimen therefore Guiglia’s “ holotype ” specimen must be considered as the lectotype (I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 74.6). The additional male in the MZUF not examined by Guiglia is a paralectotype.
