Type specimens studied. T. aeneum (number of syntypes unknown), lectotype ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ), here designated (female, BMNH): “ Holotype [p, rounded, red-framed] // [ Brasil, Prov. Goyaz] Jatahy, Pujol [h] // aenea Kerr. Type [h]” ; syntype (?) (male, NMPC): “[ Brasil, Prov. Goyaz] Jatahy [h] // cotype [p, red, Obenberger´s label] // Tetragonoschema purpurascens Kerr, Cotype [h] Det. D r. Obenberger [p] // error calami auctoris ?? recte: T. aeneum Kerr. ?? [h] Det. D r. Obenberger [p]” . T. opacicollis , holotype ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ) by monotypy (male, MNHN): “ Jatahy, Prov. Goyas, Brésil [p] // Tetragonoschema opacicollis Théry [h] Type [p] // Muséum Paris [p] P. Guarry 1924 [h]” . T. paraguayense (number of syntypes unknown), lectotype ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ), here designated (female, NMPC): “ Paraguay, San Bernardino [h] // Typus [p, red] // Tetragonoschema paraguayense m. Type [h] Det. D r. Obenberger [p] // Mus. Nat. Pragae [p] 22832 [h]” . T. tigrense (number of syntypes unknown), lectotype ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ), here designated (male, NMPC): “Tigre [h] Buenos Aires, Argentina, M. J. Viana [p] // Typus [p, red] // Tetragonoschema tigrense m. Type [h] Det. D r. Obenberger [p] // Mus. Nat. Pragae [p] 22841 [h]” .
Further specimens studied. ARGENTINA. BUENOS AIRES: Isla Martin Garcia, M. J. Viana leg. (1 female, NMPC) ; Punta Lara, xi.1955 (1 male, 1 female, CSCA) ; San Fernando, xii.1995, J. Daguerre leg. (1 female, NMNH) ; B. A. env., 13.i.1931 (1 male, NMPC) ; no precise data, J. Boso leg. (1 female, MNCN) ; CORDOBA: Calamuchita, El Sauce, ii.1960, M. Viana leg. (5 males, 2 females, JEBC) ; ENTRE RIOS: 11.xi.1990, Liebig leg. (1 male, CLBC) ; TUCUMÁN: no precise locality, i.1960, R. Golbach leg. (1 male, NMCN) ; BRAZIL. GOYAZ: Mineiro, (1 male, NMPC; 1 male, 1 female, ISNB; 1 female, MFCB) ; Jatahy (3 males, 1 female, ISNB; 1 male, 1 female, MFCB) ; PARAGUAY. PARAGUARÍ: Serro Acahay, 25°52ʹS 57°09ʹW, 22.xi. 2010, 212m, Sv. Bílý leg. (1male, NMPC) ; CORDILLERA: Naranja, 25°53ʹS 57°05ʹW, 20.xi. 2010, 277m, Sv. Bílý leg. (1 male, NMPC).
Diagnosis. Easily distinguished species: black, matt with fine microsculpture and silky lustre; entire dorsal surface asetose, supra-antennal prominences well-developed, projecting beyond outline of head; entire elytra with fine punctation with tiny central granules; aedeagus short, flat, spindle-shaped.
Length: 3.9–4.8 mm.
Since the number of syntypes of T. aeneum is unknown I hereby designate the male from BMNH as the lectotype of T. aenea Kerremans, 1899 .
Since the number of syntypes of T. paraguayense and T. tigrense is also unknown and to avoid any confusion in the future I hereby designate the following lectotypes: the female of T. paraguayense from NMPC as the lectotype of T. paraguayense and the male of T. tigrense from NMPC as the lectotype of T. tigrense .
After having studied types of all species mentioned above I fail to find any difference and I conclude that they are conspecific with T. (T.) aeneum , T. (T.) opacicolle Théry, 1944 , T. (T.) paraguayense Obenberger, 1930 and T. tigrense Obenberger, 1947 being jumior synonyms of T. (T.) aeneum . The holotype of T. (T.) opacicollis is a specimen with a more intense red elytral lustre; the lectotype of T. (T.) paraguayense is only a large, entirely black female and the lectotype of T. (T.) tigrense is an unusually small male.
Bionomy. Unknown. Specimens from Paraguay (Serro Acahay, Naranja) were collected in the patches of the interior Atlantic forest which is rather humid biotope.
Sexual dimorphism. No dimorphism apparent.
Distribution. Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay.
