Diagnosis. In superficial appearance, T. lata resembles very closely T. emarginata , but the suffusion of fuscous scales on dorsum is darker and the fore coxa is strongly suffused with dark fuscous in T. lata . Moreover, the two species can be separated more easily by the hind tibia in that of T. lata is fuscous along the dorsal margin whereas that of T. emarginata is uniformly colored. The male antennal ciliation of T. lata is slightly longer than that of T. emarginata . In the abdominal segments of both sexes of T. lata , the tergum I is notable as it is melanized at middle in a circle or a subtriangle. The male sternum VIII is much shorter and the posterior apex does not bear long tines compared to the related species. The male genitalia are distinguished from its allies by the basal projection of the uncus and the valva gradually narrowed distally. The female genitalia are similar to those of T. emarginata and T. pediformis , but the anterior margin of sternum VIII is more broadly sclerotized in T. lata compared to the latter two species.

Description. Adult ( Figs 19A, B ). Wingspan 7.5−11.5 mm. Head glossy white or creamy white. Labial palpus creamy white, with segment I very short; segment III as long as II, fuscous ventrally and apically. Antenna with scape creamy white; flagellum dark fuscous except basal 1/3 or 1/4 of dorsal surface white, male cilia twice as long as diameter. Thorax glossy creamy white except posterior half strongly mixed with dark fuscous at middle, a fuscous median line often present. Tegula creamy white. Forewing glossy creamy white to yellowish white, anterior edge of costa black, markings dark fuscous to black: a wedge-shaped costal streak from between distal 1/4 and 1/3 of wing, attenuated distally, obliquely running toward apex and nearly reaching apical spot, followed by and confluent with a shorter costal streak extended from distal 1/5; beyond this light brown scales along costa, often forming a triangular patch reaching apex; below this sometimes with an indistinct fuscous spot; apical spot round, bordered inwardly by creamy white scales, sometimes shortly extending along termen; a broad, dark fuscous suffusion along dorsum from near base to 1/2 or 2/3, sometimes distinctly dark as a band, followed by an inwardly directed Vshaped marking, the upper fork of this nearly reaching apical spot and often confluent with costal streaks, the lower fork much shorter and running along fold; a short longitudinal streak near tornus, running in parallel with the lower fork of former marking but not reaching it; fringe on apical area creamy white with subterminal and terminal black bands, produced downwards and bifurcate; fringe on termen grey except base white, near apex with a row of coarse metallic fuscous ciliation; fringe on dorsum grey. Hindwing grey to dark grey except subapex white and apex black; fringe grey except apical area creamy white with a terminal black band. Legs creamy white; fore coxa dark fuscous to black in anterior 2/3; fore femur, tibia and tarsus black on outer surface; mid and hind tibiae with a short dark fuscous streak near apex, respectively, hind tibia dark fuscous along dorsal margin; mid and hind tarsi with first tarsomere broadly dark fuscous at middle, II–III tarsomeres dark fuscous in basal half.

Abdominal segments ( Figs 27C , 28A ). In both male and female, tergum I melanized at middle in circle or in subtriangular. In male, sternum VIII approximately 1/10 length of abdomen; lateral margins gradually narrowing from base to posterior 1/5, then almost uniformly elongate to apex; posterior apex emarginate medially; tergum VIII subtrapezoidal, with a pair of mediolateral arms arising from anterior margin of tergum III and connected to tegumen pedunculus, lateral margin with a pair of long coremata, near posterior margin with large petal-like scales mediolaterally.

Male genitalia ( Figs 42E , 43G ). Uncus broad, mitre-shaped, ventral surface with a short projection near base. Gnathos hook long and slender. Tegumen twice as long as uncus. Valva very broad, gradually narrowing from basal 1/3 or 1/2 to apex, rounded apically. Anellus lobe extremely small, oval, nearly invisible. Juxta strongly convex medially, hummock-like. Vinculum simple, narrowed. Saccus very short, slender, not exceeding tegumen pedunculus. Aedeagus with basal 2/5 dilated, slightly narrowed and straight distally, near apex slightly twisted, bearing short projections on dorsal and ventral margins, round at apex.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 59D ). Papillae anales weakly sclerotized. Apophyses anteriores approximately half length of apophyses posteriores. Sternum VIII longer than tergum VIII, weakly sclerotized medially, anterior margin produced in U-shape. Ostium bursae opening at middle of sternum VIII. Ductus bursae short, with a triangular colliculum near base, anterior half slightly broadened, ductus seminalis arising from posterior 2/5 or 1/2. Corpus bursae ovate, as long or slightly shorter than ductus bursae; signum rounded, consisting of minute denticles, placed near entrance of ductus bursae or at posterior 1/3.

Variations. Some specimens from Yunnan are yellower than the specimens from other regions.

Distribution. China (Chongqing, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Jiangxi, Taiwan, Xizang, Yunnan), Vietnam.

Etymology. The species name is from Latin, latus (broad), referring to the broad valva.

Remarks. The species name was suggested by Jialiang Zhang who previously studied Chinese Thiotricha in NKU.
