Tipulamima seyrigi Viette, [1955] View in CoL
( Figs 24–26 View FIGS 15–26 )
Tipulamima seyrigi Viette, [1955] View in CoL : 88; Viette 1957: 92, 1982: 21; Heppner & Duckworth 1981: 41; Pühringer & Kallies 2004: 33; Bartsch 2018: 174.
Type material examined. Holotype ♀ ( Figs 24–25 View FIGS 15–26 ): Madagascar Centre-Sud , Bekily, Dec.1932, A. Seyrig leg.; with labels: “Madagascar / Bekily / Reg Sud de i’Ile”; “ Tipulamima / seyrigi n. sp. / Holotype ♀ / P. Viette ”; “Muséum Paris / XII.32. / A. Seyrig ”; “Holotype” ( MNHN).
The only known specimen is the female holotype. Analogous to the significant sexual dimorphism within other species of Tipulamima the conspecifity of T. seyrigi and T. grandidieri might be possible. A second female from Sambirano ( Fig. 26 View FIGS 15–26 ) ( MNHN) listed by Viette ([1955]) differs significantly by the smaller transparent areas of both wings, the broader black apical area of the forewing, the larger hindwing discal spot and the much broader hindwing margin. It might further not even be conspecific with T. seyrigi , given the extreme geographic disjunction of the two records and the completely different ecological setting. Another female from “Region d’Ivohibe, vallée de l’Iantara” listed by Viette (1982) is here not taken into consideration. This specimen is superficially similar to T. seyrigi , but does not belong to Tipulamima . It is smaller, generally more delicate; the orange parts of the wings paler, yellow; the transparent areas larger; the hindwing discal spot shorter, not reaching M 2; and the hindlegs not elongated, without black, or tufted scales. Because of these characters, we conclude that it belongs to another, so far undescribed species of Synanthedonini .
Variation. Unknown. The specimen from Sambirano has distal portion of the transparent areas of the forewings covered with orange scales; the margins of the hindwings three to four times wider; the discal spot of the hindwings somewhat larger, reaching common stalk of M 3 and CuA 1; the tarsus of the hindleg partially black; and the abdomen ventrally paler whitish.
