TRIGRAMMIA View in CoL HERRICH- SCHÄFFER

(Figs 12, 115, 116)

Trigrammia Herrich-Schäffer, [1855] . Type species: Trigrammia quadrinotaria Herrich-Schäffer, [1855] . North America .

Description

Head. Antenna not bipectinate. Chaetosemata strongly extended, not quite meeting medially.

Wings (Fig. 12). Off-white with weak fasciae.

Male genitalia (Fig. 115). Uncus triangular, setose; horns absent. Gnathos with medial element strongly developed. Valva: sacculus a short lobe; valvula absent. Vinculum: saccus short, pointed.

Pregenital abdomen of male. Sternum A3 with pecten. Sternum A8 not modified.

Female genitalia (Fig. 116). Bursa copulatrix: ductus bursae striated, broadening suddenly into corpus bursae; corpus bursae with large signum.

Diagnosis. The only species is pale with three rather weak, pale brown lines on the forewing and a single postmedial line on the hindwing. The forewing does not particularly resemble the structure in other genera without horns on the uncus. Unlike the condition in Isturgia and Tephrina , the chaetosemata are strongly extended across the head.

Distribution. North America.

Comments. The type species was assigned to Semiothisa in Hodges et al. (1983). Despite the similarity of the shapes of the valva and uncus of the male genitalia to those of Isturgia and Tephrina , no apomorphy has been identified to suggest the synonymy of Trigrammia with either of these genera.

Number of species. One.
