Variola albimarginata Baissac 1953 —Lyretail grouper

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland by Kailola (1987b: 233); subsequently reported from Lihir Group , Namatamai District , New Ireland by Fry et al. (2006: 130). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell during 14–28 June 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2, 5.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Marshall Islands, Samoa and Tonga, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Western Australia, Queensland ( Australia) and New Caledonia. Solitary in seaward coral and rocky reefs, 4–200 m depth. Marine.
