Description. Body length 5.5–7.7 mm (M= 6.4 mm, HT= 6.1 mm), forebody length 2.4–2.7 mm (M= 2.6 mm, HT= 2.6 mm). Body black ( Figs. 123, 125 View FIGURES 123–128 ), elytra brown, abdominal tergites markedly bluish iridescent; antennae brown with complete first segment and segments 9–11 or 10–11 yellow; legs and maxillary palpi light reddish.

Head suboval ( Fig. 124, 126 View FIGURES 123–128 ), about as long as wide (L/W=0.95–1.03, M=0.98, HT=0.96), slightly widened behind eyes, with two pairs of interocular setae. Temples markedly shorter than eyes (LT/LE=0.75–0.98, M=0.83, HT=0.82). Dorsal side of head shining, without micropunctures. Only sparse pale grey pubescence behind eyes. Four postocular setae visible on each side, additional seta on hind margin of eye absent. Mandibles each with one large tooth ( Fig. 127 View FIGURES 123–128 ). Maxillary palpi with terminal segment wide and quite short, pubescent, asymmetric, only slightly wider and longer than glabrous penultimate segment which is triangular ( Fig. 128 View FIGURES 123–128 ). First segment of antenna slightly longer than next five; segments 1 to 4 elongate, segment 5 about as long as wide or slightly transverse (L/W=0.89–1.07, M=0.97, HT=1.02), segments 6–9 transverse, segment 10 markedly transverse (R=0.61–0.88, M=0.77, HT=0.65).

Pronotum ( Figs. 124, 126 View FIGURES 123–128 ) slightly transverse (W/L=1.10–1.15, M=1.12, HT=1.12), markedly widened behind with sides slightly rounded, widest in basal half, shining, without micropunctures. One pair of dorsal setae and one pair of lateral setae. Marginal setae short. Elytra markedly transverse (R=1.15–1.68, M=1.38, HT=1.51)) with short, pale, but not shining pubescence arising from dense aspirate punctures. Apical fringe of bristles slightly longer than pubescence on other parts of elytra. Abdominal tergites with short, sparse pubescence, interstices in transverse direction on middle part of tergite IV about three or four times as large as diameter of punctures. Meso- and metatarsi with short empodial setae, shorter than claws (similar as in Figs. 87, 88 View FIGURES 87–90 ).

Male (n=5). Sternite 9 long and narrow ( Figs. 142, 146 View FIGURES 139–146 ), apex of tergite 10 narrowly rounded, with very long setae ( Fig. 141, 145 View FIGURES 139–146 ). Aedeagus ( Figs. 129–140, 143, 144 View FIGURES 129–138 View FIGURES 139–146 ) 0.70–0.76 mm long (M= 0.73 mm, HT= 0.70 mm). Parameres bilobed, lobes markedly separated, sensory pegs confusedly arranged in posterior quarter ( Figs. 140, 144 View FIGURES 139–146 ). Median lobe slightly overreaching paramere, apex widely rounded ( Figs. 131–133, 136–138 View FIGURES 129–138 , 140, 144 View FIGURES 139–146 ).

Female. Posterior margin of tergite 10 trunctate ( Fig. 147, 149 View FIGURES 147–150 ), valves as in Fig. 148, 150 View FIGURES 147–150 .

Differential diagnosis. Acylophorus montanus sp. nov. is very similar to A. hova sp. nov., but differs by pronotum narrower, less widened behind, sparsely punctured abdomen, completely yellow last two or three antennal segments, more widely rounded apex of median lobe in males and truncate apical margin of tergite 10 in females.

Distribution. The new species is known only from Vohidray ridge in South-east Madagascar and from Ambohitantely in central Madagascar ( Fig. 176 View FIGURES 172–177 ).

Bionomics. All specimens of Acylophorus montanus sp. nov. were collected by sifting forest litter, among stumps vegetation and under Phillipia.

Discussion. The new species is known from two areas separated by distance about 600 km. Specimens from both areas were illustrated to demonstrate only low intraspecific variability.
