DIAGNOSIS. Amorbia humerosana can be distinguished from A. cuneana by its darker, gray-dominated FW pattern, the absence of a dark line of scales over the base of the tegula and anterior margin of the thorax, and the absence of emargination in the sacculus. In females of A. humerosana the ductus bursae is similar in diameter throughout its length.

DESCRIPTION. MALE. FW length 11.0–13.0 mm (mean = 12.0 mm; n = 8). HEAD: Frons convex with white scales, vertex smooth, dark gray. Antenna pale brown. Labial palpus mostly gray laterally, inner surface paler. THORAX: Dorsum smooth scaled, dark gray, tegula concolorous with dorsum. FW ground dark gray, median and subterminal fasciae paler, varying to a pale brown with dark costal blotch. HW brown with defined darker patch at apex. ABDOMEN: Gray, with well defined dorsal pit. Genitalia as in Fig. 68 (slide # JJE24, MEM, U.S.A., Mississippi, Stone Co.; n = 5). Uncus developed, extending beyond socii. Struts of socii present. Transtilla narrow in middle. Valva subrectangular. Sacculus sclerotized, occupying basal 0.5 of ventral edge of valva. Aedeagus 0.75X length of valva, evenly curved throughout .

FEMALE. FW length 12.0–13.5 mm (mean = 12.7; n = 5). HEAD and THORAX: As described for male. ABDOMEN: Genitalia as in Fig. 94 (slide # EPR40, MEM, U.S.A., Mississippi, Jackson Co.; n = 3). Lamella antevaginalis developed into large lateral pockets; median sinus squared. Ductus bursae 2.0X length of papillae anales, relatively uniform in diameter. Ductus seminalis arises at 0.2X length of ductus bursae from ostium .

DISTRIBUTION AND BIOLOGY. This species is distributed from the Gulf States to the northeastern U.S.A. and southeastern Canada ( Fig. 134). It has been collected from March through September. There is a single record from Florida from December.

IMMATURE STAGES ( Figs. 115–116). Last instar larvae are ca. 2.5 cm in length; the head is tan colored, with dark brown lateral bands; a narrow band borders the side of the prothoracic shield; the anal comb is well developed.

HOST PLANT RECORDS. Amorbia humerosana is a leafroller of several plant families (see Appendix III) including Pinaceae ( Picea glauca , Picea rubens , Pinus sp. , Pinus banksiana , Abies balsamea , Larix laricina ); Caprifoliaceae ( Viburnum sp. ); Anacardiaceae ( Rhus radicans , Rhus aromatica ); Araliaceae ( Aralia sp. ); Asteraceae ( Solidago sp. ); Betulaceae ( Alnus sp. , Betula sp. ); Fagaceae ( Castanea dentata ); Lauraceae ( Lindera sp. ); Liliaceae (Asparagus officionalis); Ericaceae ( Gaylussacia sp. ); Rosaceae ( Malus domestica ); and Salicaceae ( Salix sp. ).

REMARKS. Some specimens from the Gulf States are smaller and paler with a darker costal blotch from the postmedian fascia to the termen. According to R. L. Brown (unpublished data), both forms fly at the same time, but the pale form usually appears first in spring. Based on the analysis of the male and female genitalia, we are unable to differentiate the two.
