Brachylinga ornata (Kröber) View in CoL

( Figs. 199, 213)

ornata Kröber (1911:501 View in CoL fem. key, 516 orig. desc.; 1913:33 dist.; 1928a:6 dist., 12 fem. key) ( Psilocephala View in CoL ); Metz et al. (2003:248 comb. change, 250: trans. orig. desc.) ( Brachylinga View in CoL ). Type locality Brazil, Nova Teutonia. Neotype female in INHS.

Diagnosis

Brachylinga ornata is taxonomically associated with B. bicolor , B. cinerea , B. concava , B. curacaoensis , B. divaricata , B. fraterna , B. tepocae and B. xanthoperna in lacking setae on the katepisternum; in having the postocular, mesonotal, and coxal macrosetae dark reddish brown; and in having the halter yellow. Brachylinga ornata is known only from the female and is similar to B. bicolor , B. concava , and B. divaricata in having the parafacial dark reddish brown with silver pruinescence laterally and dorsally. The females of B. bicolor , B. concava , B. divaricata , and B. ornata are indistinguishable based on external characters. Internally B. bicolor , B. concava , and B. ornata have the spermathecal ducts directed anteriorly ( Figs. 188, 192, 199) while in B. divaricata the spermathecal ducts are directed laterally before bending at a right angle and continuing anteriorly ( Fig. 194). Until male specimens are found, B. ornata is retained as a valid species based on its geographical distribution.

Habitats and phenology Brachylinga ornata has been handnetted from July through April.

Specimens examined

Type specimen: The holotype female of Psilocephala ornata Kröber was collected in Paraguay and was deposited in the HNHM. This collection was destroyed in 1956 (M. Foldavi, personal communication). Currently, no specimens of Psilocephala ornata are available from Paraguay, so a female specimen labeled "BRAZIL, N. Teutonia, 1.11.57, F. Plaumann", (MEI 153864) has been selected for the neotype and is deposited in the collection of the Illinois Natural History Survey. This neotype is designated in order to fix the concept of Psilocephala ornata and to ensure universal and consistent interpretation of the same. Other specimens: BRAZIL. CEARA.
