sericeifrons Kröber (1928b:34 View in CoL orig. desc., 35 Fig. 4. fem. ant.) ( Psilocephala View in CoL ). Type locality Chile ,

Olmué. Lectotype female in DEIC. New Combination.

Diagnosis

Brachylinga sericeifrons is taxonomically associated with B. mexicana in possessing setae on the katepisternum; in having the halter knob dark brown; in having the foretibia dark reddish brown; in having the gonocoxite in ventral view ( Fig. 44) lacking the short, thick, dark reddish brown apicomedial macrosetae and the median margin without a broad, quadrate, glabrous projection. Brachylinga sericeifrons differs from B. mexicana in lacking setae on the posterior half of the midcoxa (absent in 92% of the specimens, n=50); in having the gonocoxite in ventral view ( Fig. 44) lacking dark reddish brown macrosetae apicomedially; the distiphallus in lateral view ( Fig. 182) with the apical third elongate, sinuate; and tergite 8 ( Fig. 21) narrow medially, less than 0.05 mm.

Redescription of male

Variation (n=10).

Head. Ommatidia smaller ventrally and laterally. Frons pruinescence white; setae dark reddish brown, elongate. Antenna dark reddish brown; setae on scape dark reddish brown, short. Parafacial pruinescence gray. Maxillary palpus dark reddish brown; setae white. Genal setae white. Occipital setae white becoming pale gold, lanceolate dorsally. Postocular macrosetae dark reddish brown.

Thorax. Macrosetae dark reddish brown, 2–3 np, 2 sa, 1 pa, 1–2 dc, 2 sc. Mesonotum dull brownish gray; setae black, elongate intermixed with dull gold lanceolate subappressed setae. Pleuron and scutellum dark reddish brown, pruinescence gray; setae white on propleuron, anepisternum, katepisternum, metanepisternum, and laterotergite, dull gold on scutellum. Wing. Membrane pale gray, veins pale brown; pterostigma pale brown; cell m 3 open slightly or closed. Halter dark brown. Legs. Coxa setae white, absent on posterior surface of midcoxa (92% of specimens, n=50). Femora dark brown, pruinescence white; ventral setae black; av 0–2:0:2–5, pv 0:0:0–2. Foretibia dark brown, mid and hindtibia dark yellow, apex dark brown. Tarsomere 1 dark yellow, apex dark brown; 2–5 dark brown. Tarsi dark brown.

Abdomen. Dark brown, pruinescence white, dense on tergites 2–8; dorsal setae white, appressed; lateral setae white. Terminalia (MEI 045973). Tergite 8 ( Fig. 21), medial length narrow (0.02 mm); setae dark yellow, absent medially on posterior margin. Sternite 8 ( Fig. 44), sides rounded, posterior margin deeply emarginate. Epandrium ( Fig. 21), sides tapered apically; setae dark yellow. Cercus ( Fig. 21) ending basal to apex of hypoproct. Hypoproct ( Fig. 21), posterior margin truncate, ending distal to apex of cercus. Gonocoxite ventral view ( Fig. 44), broad basally, tapering apically to short, blunt point; setae dark yellow, elongate intermixed with dark brown setae apically; dorsal view ( Fig. 67) posteromedial lobe short, gonocoxal bridge absent; lateral view ( Fig. 90) oval, tapered apically to broad, rounded point; ventral lobe ( Fig. 44) with ventral spines. Gonostylus dorsal view ( Fig. 113), basodorsal lobe broad with medial and lateral lobes, lateral lobe shorter than medial lobe and covered with short, fine spines; ventral margin sinuate, setae dark yellow, not extending apically in distinct tuft; lateral surface with short fine spines. Aedeagus with dorsal apodeme ( Fig. 136) broad, quadrate, posterolateral margin angulate; ventral apodeme ( Fig. 159) tapered anteriorly, extending beyond anterior margin of dorsal apodeme; distiphallus dorsal view ( Fig. 136) tapered apically, lateral view ( Fig. 182) bent ventrally at 90° angle, sinuate, apicolateral spines absent; ejaculatory apodeme ( Fig. 136), anterior margin bifurcate.

Variation (n=50). On 46 specimens setae were absent of the posterior half of the midcoxa. On specimen MEI 046096 many setae were present; on specimens MEI 046950, 046951, 047088 a few setae were present.

Female

Similar to male except for following.

Variation (n=10).

Body length 4.8–6.7, 5.6 mm.

Head. Frons dark brown, pruinescence whitish gray, white ventrally

with small, dark brown circle dorsolaterally; setae dark reddish brown, elongate.

Thorax. Macrosetae 3 np, 1 sa, 1 pa, 1–2 dc, 2 sc. Legs. Setae absent on posterior surface of midcoxa (92% of specimens, n=50). Anteroventral macrosetae 1–2:0:3–4, pv 0:0:3–4.

Abdomen. Dark brown, glossy, pruinescence gray laterally on tergites 1–5, over all of tergites 6–7; dorsal setae dark brown, appressed with white, elongate, appressed setae along posterior margin of tergites 1–2; lateral setae dark brown, erect. Terminalia (MEI 046873) dark reddish brown. Setae on median lobe of tergite 9 absent. Immature Stages. One male (MEI 046953) and 2♀ (047944–5) have been reared from larvae collected at La Rinconada de Maipú , Quebrada de la Plata, Chile from soil .

Distribution Brachylinga sericeifrons is known from Argentina and Chile ( Fig. 210).

Habitats and phenology

Adults of Brachylinga sericeifrons have been handnetted on coastal dunes or on the leaves of Lithrea sp. ; but most often they have been collected in Malaise traps in dry washes or in Nothofagus forest. Adults have been collected in all months of the year except June and July.

Specimens examined

Type specimens. Kröber (1928b:34) described Psilocephala sericeifrons based on an unspecified number of female specimens from Olmué and Concepción in Chile and deposited them in the Deutsches Entomologisches Museum, Dahlem (this museum collection is now part of DEIC). Only one female of this syntype series was located in the DEIC. This specimen is labeled "Chile, P. HERBST" (printed on white label) with "Olmué" [given as Olemué in original description] " 31.III.1920 " (handwritten); "Psilocepha female sericeifrons" (handwritten on white label) with "det. Kröber 1927" (printed); " Holotypus " (printed on red label); "Type" (printed on red label); "Coll. DEI Eberswalde" (printed on white label). This specimen has been given the MEI #115973 printed on yellow paper. This specimen is designated as the lectotype in order to fix the concept of Psilocephala sericeifrons and to ensure universal and consistent interpretation of the same. Other specimens. ARGENTINA.
