Enoclerus boblloydi Rifkind , n. sp.

( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 9 )

Type specimen. Holotype female: México, Querétaro, 30.7 km W. Xilitla, 1524 m, 3–vi–87, R. Anderson, R. Turnbow, oak–pine forest. Holotype deposited in TAMU.

Diagnosis. The distinctive elytral markings of this species will serve to separate it from congeners. Its elytral pattern is vaguely similar to that of Colyphus pictus (Gorham) , but that Guatemalan species has the typical subcylindrical pronotum of its genus, and different surface sculpturing.

Description (Holotype). Length: 6.75 mm. Color: orange–testaceous (pronotum with a small infuscate triangular macula on each side); elytra with a complex pattern of transverse stramineous and dark–brown fasciae and maculae as in Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 9 . Head: antennae elongate; club loosely composed, gradually expanded from antennomere 7; eyes rather prominent; ocular notch short, triangulate; surface shining, densely, shallowly punctate, moderately densely but inconspicuously set with short, orangish, suberect setae, intermixed with some longer, erect orangish and brownish setae. Pronotum: broader than long (40:36), slightly narrower than elytra at base; transverse impression deeply incised, broadly U–shaped at middle; disk subflattened at middle; sides convex posterior to transverse impression, then converging obliquely to basal collar; prebasal depression broad; surface shining, shallowly punctate and slightly roughened, set rather sparsely with short, fine, suberect setae, and longer, brownish, more robust suberect setae, the latter concentrated anteriorly and laterally. Elytra: elongate (ratio of length to width 102:73), widest at approximately posterior 1/3, rather shallow in cross–section; anterior margin nearly transverse; humeri darkened, subcarinate; sides slightly constricted at anterior 1/4, then gradually expanded to posterior 1/4, thereafter arcuately convergent to separately rounded, slightly dehiscent apices; subbasal tumescences slight, broadly rounded above; disk subflattened at middle above; surface shining, minutely, rather sparsely punctulate, closely but shallowly rugulose, rather sparsely set with a mixture of pale yellow and dark brown, suberect and erect setae of various lengths. Mesosternum: posterior median process not elevated. Metasternum: anterior median process not elevated; surface shallowly rugulose, sparsely setose. Abdomen: shining, slightly roughened, sparsely setose; visible sternite 5 very shallowly arcuately emarginate at middle of hind margin; visible sternite 6 arcuate at apex. Legs: rather robust.

Variation. Known from the holotype only.

Etymology. I name this nicely checkered, checkered beetle for my brother–in–law and friend Robert Lloyd, who has been an excellent field companion on several collecting trips.
