Type material. Holotype female. Brazil, State of Espírito Santo, Sooretama municipality, Sooretama Biological Reserve (ICMBio), forest leaf litter of the Atlantic Forest, about 100 m asl and 40 km from the coast line. Locality coordinates: 19°3'8.53"S, 40°8'56.12"W, 25.iv.2008, collection number CM/ MNRJ 1958, G. Queiroz coll. Paratypes (11): one male and one female from a forest fragment 3 km far from Sooretama Biological Reserve, 10.iv.2007, CM/ MNRJ 1829; five males, one female and three juveniles, same data of holotype. Deposited at Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro/Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Description. Habitus typical of the genus. Body length of holotype (female): 0,93 mm, length of paratypes: 0.60–1.3 mm. Color in ethanol: light blue to light gray. Dark diffuse pigment on ocelli.

Ratio head: antenna = 1: 1.1. Ant I with 7 chaetae. Ant II with 11 chaetae. Ant III and IV fused dorsally, ventral separation marked. Sensory organ of Ant III with two small rod shape sensilla; two longer and subcylindrical guard sensilla, the ventral longer than the dorsal sensilla; ventral microsensillum present ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ). Apical bulb trilobed. Ant IV with six sensilla; dorsolateral microsensillum absent. Subapical organite round and very near to the apical bulb ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ).

Eyes 8+8. PAO almost two times larger than ocellus A, bearing 8–10 vesicles disposed in a rosette. Chaetotaxy of head as in Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 6 . Buccal cone typical of the genus. Labium bearing chaetae A–G ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ). Pre-labral/labral formula: 2/2342. Maxillae styliform without tooth or lamellae; mandible with 4 teeth: two small subequal apical teeth and two larger basal teeth ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ).

Dorsal chaetotaxy composed of micro (8 µm), meso (12–14 µm) and macrochaetae (18–22 µm). Sensilla long, with a clavate apex, and becoming longer towards the last segments of abdomen (Sensilla of Th II = 55 µm; Abd V = 70 µm) ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ). Sensillar formula by half tergum: 022/ 111110. Ratio micro: meso: macro chaetae: sensilla = 1: 1.5: 2: 7. Ventral chaetotaxy of Abd II–VI as in Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7 – 14 . Chaetotaxy of legs summarized in table 2. Tenent hair on tibiotarsi accuminated. Unguis with one basal inner tooth ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 7 – 14 ). Ventral tube with 3+3 chaetae. Tenaculum with three teeth on each ramus ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 7 – 14 ). Furcula present: manubrium with 7+7 ventral chaetae; dens with 6+6 chaetae; mucro separated from dens with two lamella tapering and apex slightly hooked ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 7 – 14 ). Ratio Manubrium: Dens: Mucro = 2.4:1.6:1.0. Each anal valve with 14–15 chaetae and 2 chaetae hr; Abd VI with 3 setulae in the ventral side ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 7 – 14 ). Discussion. Furculanurida tropicalia sp. nov. shares some characters with F. goeldiana Arlé & Rufino, 1976 , such as mandible with four teeth and a circular PAO with 8–10 vesicles. However, due to the succinct description of F. goeldiana , leaving out characters such as body chaetotaxy, antennal organs, legs, etc, it is not possible to establish further similarities.

Furculanurida tropicalia sp. nov. is well characterized and distinguished from other members of the genus by being the only one that presents 8+8 eyes. Table 3 summarizes the main characters and the differences among species of Furculanurida .
