( Fig. 4A–H View FIGURE 4 A – H )

Description. Measurements of holotype. Prodorsum: length 215, width 152, height 88. Prodorsal setae: sensillus 43, in 81, le 25, ro 48. Notogaster: length 394, width 268, height 222. Notogastral setae: c 1 73, h 1 71, p 1 68. Plates: genitoaggenital 101 × 96, anoadanal 139 × 101. Measurements of paratypes. Prodorsum: length 159–228, width 116–157, height 63–101. Notogaster: length 278–404, width 187–283, height 172–263.

Integument. Colour deep brown. Surface of body covered with strong, round concavities.

Prodorsum with small median crista. Sigillar fields weakly visible because of strong integument. Posterior furrows well developed. Lateral carinae absent. Sensilli of medium size, with narrow pedicel and club-shaped head. Interlamellar setae erect, thick, covered with distinct spines in distal half. Lamellar setae spiniform, rough.

Rostral setae thicker, spiniform, slightly flexible, rough, procumbent, directed forwards. Exobothridial setae vestigial.

Notogaster with setae relatively short (c 1/ c 1– d 1=0.8), thick, rigid setae covered with distinct, dense spines in distal half. Setae c 1 and c 3 positioned near anterior margin, setae c 2 far remote from margin, vestigial setae invisible because of strong integument. Two pairs of lyrifissures ia and im present.

Ventral region. Setae h of mentum longer than distance between them. Genitoaggenital plates with nine pairs of setae with formula 7(4+3):2. Anoadanal plates each with five well developed setae. Adanal setae ad 1 and ad 2 thicker than anal setae, setae ad 2 bent distally, situated posteriorly of an 1 setae, setae ad 3 short, needleform.

Legs. Formulae of setae and solenidia of “complete type ” ( Niedbała 2000). Setae d on femora I situated at distal end of article.

Material examined. Holotype and 170 paratypes: locality 4; four paratypes: locality 3.

Comparison. The new species is most similar to three other oriental species: Hoplophthiracarus foveolatus Aoki, 1980 (a) from Japan, H. clavatellus Niedbała & Corpuz-Raros, 1998 from Philippines and H. parafoveolatus Niedbała, 2000 from Sumatra. The new species is distinguishable from H. foveolatus and H. clavatellus by the shape of longer and procumbent rostral setae (versus short, straight, erect setae) and the implantation of ad 2 setae, posterior of an 1 setae (versus location between anal setae). H. parafoveolatus has distinct lateral carinae of prodorsum (versus absence of carinae), slightly dilated notogastral setae (versus not dilated), formula of genital setae 4+2:3 (versus 4+3:2).

Etymology. Latin clavatus meaning “club-shaped” and alludes to the shape of sensilli.
