Madiza fabae Rondani, 1876

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1876a: 64.

TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but presumably it is Parma (Italy) because he referred to observations made by himself.

TYPE MATERIAL: 3 ♀♀, syntypes (one missing right fore- and mid-legs; one glued to a cardboard) ( MZUF: Box 38): Madiza Fall. Siphonella Mcqrt / ruficornis Mcqrt / 2051 / in caule Vicia fabae .

CURRENT STATUS: Becker (1905), Nartshuk (1984b), Canzoneri et al. (1995), and O’Hara et al. (2011) did not list it; incertae sedis in Chloropidae View in CoL (this work).

REMARKS: Rondani (1876a: 64) included enough characters in his original description to allow us to separate this nominal species from Madiza (Siphonella) ruficornis Macquart, 1835 . The MZUF did not contain any specimen named Madiza fabae but, under the name Madiza ruficornis , there are three specimens labeled “ in caule Vicia fabae [in a Vicia fabae stem]”. In our opinion, these could be the syntypes for Madiza fabae . An additional female in the MZUF numbered “2051” and labeled “ M. ruficornis in tipica Vicia fabae ” is not included in the type series because its label is yellowish rather than the greenish color of Rondani’s original handwritten ones and is in a lower row in the Box: we treat it to be a subsequent addition. Rondani (1876a) included Madiza fabae in the family Chloropidae . Nowadays the genus Madiza Fallén, 1810 is included in the family Milichiidae ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020) . However, our study of the type allows us to confirm this nominal species belongs to the family Chloropidae , as confirmed by the biology of the species (stem-miners) and its label (Siphonella Macquart, 1835 belongs to Chloropidae ).
