Perilampsis diademata Bezzi, 1924b, p. 482 View in CoL .

Perilampsis diademata: Munro, 1939b View in CoL (morphology, biology); Cogan and Munro, 1980, p. 530 (Afrotropical catalogue); Hancock, 1987 ( Zimbabwe record, attraction to methyl eugenol); Norrbom et al., 1999, p. 186 (world catalogue); Hancock, 2003 ( Angola record).

Diagnosis

Arista almost bare; scutum with two transverse bands; postpronotum white; scutellum white with lateral margins yellow-brown; anatergite and katatergite brown or katatergite with pale yellow spot; legs yellow with femora darker yellow; wing, anterior apical band complete, touching discal band, posterior apical band present, discal band not reaching posterior margin; abdomen mainly shining orange-red to red.

Description

Head. Antennal segments orange-brown. Arista almost bare, few dispersed rays shorter than width of base of arista. Frons ventral half yellow-white, dorsal part orange-brown. Two frontals, placed parallel to medial eye margin; two orbitals, placed slightly convergent with anterior orbital located more medially. Face white, at antennal implant with pale brown transverse band. Occiput yellow, with pair of very faint darker patches.

Thorax. Scutum shining reddish brown to brown, sometimes paler ground colour with brown patches; dark dispersed pilosity; two transverse bands with silvery pilosity and microtrichosity, one anteriorly of transverse suture, second band near dorsocentrals. Postpronotum white. Anepisternum brown, with white band occupying posterodorsal part, its ventral margin reaching posteroventral corner; with pale pilosity; one anepisternal seta. Anatergite and katatergite brown, at most katatergite with pale yellow spot. Scutellum white, lateral margins yellow-brown coloured to some extent, usually for length beyond basal scutellar seta but not beyond apical scutellar seta. Subscutellum brown. Legs pale yellow, femora darker yellow.

Wing ( Figure 2C View Figure 2 ). Wing bands brown, well developed. Basal part of wing brown, subbasal irregular spots and streaks present. Anterior apical band completely filling cells r 1 and r 2+3. Posterior apical band touching anterior apical band. Subapical band isolated. Discal band not reaching posterior wing margin; touching anterior apical band near pterostigma; largely merged with subbasal spots and streaks. R-M ratio 0.75–0.93.

Abdomen. Shining orange-red to red, posterior fourth to two-thirds of tergites 2 and 4 with greyish band.

Female. As male except for the following characters: pubescence of arista slightly longer, equal to width of arista base; femora darker than in male. Female terminalia, oviscape slightly longer than abdominal tergites, shining black-brown, with black pilosity. Aculeus ( Figure 3e View Figure 3 ) orange, flattened, about 12 times as long as wide; aculeus tip ( Figure 4g View Figure 4 ) slightly sinuate, pointed.

Body length. 3.30–4.20 mm; wing length 3.75–4.00 mm.

Material examined

Holotype. 3, SOUTH AFRICA, Pretoria , 10.I.1923, H.K. Munro ( SANC).

Other material. ANGOLA: 1♀, Rocadas, R. Cunene, 19–22.II.1972 (BMNH). CONGO D.R.: 1♀, Kivu, Plaine de la Sanghe, 1950, H. Bomans (KMMA). NAMIBIA: 13, RtC 27, 100km N Aus, Tirasberge, 16.IX.2003, A. Freidberg (TAU); 533 6♀♀, Sesriem river bed, 17.IX.2003, A. Freidberg (TAU). SOUTH AFRICA: 2♀♀, Augrabies, Lower Orange River area, July 2008, reared ex fruits Loranthaceae , probably Tapinanthus oleifolius, H. van Niekerk (KMMA) ; Transvaal, Marikana, October–November 1938, S.A. Turner, M654 [= reared fruits Loranthus rubromarginatus according to Munro’s notebooks], 1♀ (NMSA); 13 2♀♀ (BMNH). 1♀, Cape, Messelpadpas, 25mi SSW Springbok, 7.IX.1972, 1100ft, M.E. Irwin, at stream seepage (NMSA via TAU); 1♀, Pretoria, Roodeplaat, May 1959, J. Bot (KMMA).

Distribution

Angola, Congo (D.R.), Namibia, South Africa. Also recorded from Zimbabwe ( Hancock, 1987).

Hosts

Reared from fruits of Tapinanthus rubromarginatus ( Munro, 1939b as Loranthus rubromarginatus ) and from a Loranthaceae , probably T. oleifolius (J.C. Wendl.) Danser (cf. material examined). In both cases the larvae were observed to feed on the seeds.

Comments

As discussed under P. curta , males of the latter and P. diademata can be difficult to separate. P. diademata is one of the two species (the other being P. miratrix ) within the genus for which there is an attractant record with para-pheromones: it is reported to be attracted to methyl eugenol and iso-eugenol ( Hancock 1987, 2003).
