Figures 17 View FIGURE 17 A-G

Material examined: Antilles: ZMA V.Pol. 1550B (1) Hog Island near Pt. Salines, Grenada, 8.VII.1967; Rhizophora , mud, 0–1.25m .

Description: Specimen complete, 37 segments, 6mm long, thorax 3mm long, 0.5mm wide. Tentacular membrane with swollen edge, base short ( Fig. 17A View FIGURE 17 ). Upper lip conical, rounded, projecting antero-ventrally. Lower lip well developed, longer than base of upper lip. Two pairs of short lateral lappets in segments 2–3, free, not connected to ventral shields, edge only developed laterally, without dorsal margins. Nephridial papillae rounded, swollen, placed anteriorly to notopodia. Nine ventral shields ( Fig. 17B View FIGURE 17 ), starting wider, decreasing in width up to segment 4; then, of same size; ventral groove from segment 10, up to middle abdomen; posterior abdomen with small ventral shields. Second segment swollen dorsally, almost forming two short lobes ( Fig. 17C View FIGURE 17 ). Sixteen pairs of notopodia, body compacted on first six segments with notochaetae, then, notopodia more separated to end of thorax; first notopodia smallest. Notochaetae on anterior thoracic segments lanceolate, short, distally symmetrically bilimbate ( Fig. 17D View FIGURE 17 ); posterior thoracic segments with both, distally serrated chaetae ( Figs 17E,F View FIGURE 17 ) and lanceolate chaetae. Thoracic uncini ( Fig. 17G View FIGURE 17 ) MF:2–3:3:3:2–3:2– 3; PP triangular; PF absent; Oc convex; Cp with at least 5 rows small teeth; MF twice as long as distance from MF to first row; Sr narrow, SrP absent; AP rounded, AF absent; Bs strongly convex. Six first abdominal segments separated, then tapering and closer to each other. Abdominal uncini resembling thoracic ones, MF:3– 4:4–5:6–7:6–7:α. Many eggs, especially between segments 12–18, dorsally placed. Pygidium with smooth edge, without papillae.

Staining pattern: Some structures stain completely: ventral shields from segments 2–10 ( Fig. 17A,B View FIGURE 17 ); segments 1, 2 and 3 only in dorsal region ( Fig. 17C View FIGURE 17 ); pairs of lateral lappets in segments 2–3; nephridial papillae in segments 5–10.

Discussion: This is the first record of the genus in the Caribbean ; nevertheless, this species is not named because it is poorly preserved. Proclea sp. 1 differs from the other species mainly in the shape of chaetae. Proclea emmi has anterior chaetigers with unilimbate chaetae with a short distal serrated region on the limb, and asymmetrically bilimbate chaeta smooth, and serrated chaetae with bilimbation in the base in posterior chaetigers. Uncini were not drawn ( Annenkova, 1937). Proclea graffi has chaetae unilimbate and alimbate in anterior chaetigers, and straight serrated chaetae on posterior chaetigers ( Hessle, 1917). Proclea glabrolimbata has serrated chaetae on anterior segments and asymmetrically bilimbate chaetae with hirsute tips in posterior segments ( Hessle, 1917); the uncini are similar to those of Proclea sp. 1 . There is no available comparative information for P. malmgreni .

Distribution: Grenada, Lesser Antilles. 0–1.25m deep.
