Measurements. Total length 20.6–23.7; total width 11.9–12.7; head length 1.4–2.3; head width 3.6–4.1; length of antennal articles I: 0.7–1.2; II: 2.0–2.7; III: 1.7–2.1; IV: 3.2–5.1; V: 5.2–5.8; pronotum length 3.6–4.4; pronotum width 12.6–14.3; scutellum length 9.2–10.5; scutellum width 7.1–8.1.

Diagnosis. Species large (20—24 mm) and dorsally dark green. Pronotum and scutellum with black punctures arranged in dark lines interspersed with irregular yellow lines. Contour of the corium almost completely made by yellow veins, also present a yellow calloused rhombus. Connexivum with a contrasting yellow spot on margin and yellow medial callus on each segment ( Fig. 12G View FIGURE 12 ); segment VII almost completely black, only basal 1/5 green, medial yellow callous present. Body ventrally green variegated with light green, yellow, dark brown and black. Evaporatorium mostly dark brown. Antennae reddish to brown. Legs yellow.

Head. Dorsally dark green; Mandibular plates dark with yellow lateral stripes; punctures dark. Tylus with a median longitudinal yellow line and dark lateral lines ( Fig. 12G View FIGURE 12 ). Ventral surface yellow. First rostral segment clearly surpassing the limit of bucculae in lateral view.

Thorax. Pronotum densely punctured, punctures coarse and black on dark brown spots; pronotal disc with small irregular yellow calloused lines; cicatrices variegate with brown, green and greenish yellow, delimiting dark brown furrows surrounded by pale greenish yellow calloused stripes ( Fig. 12G View FIGURE 12 ); anterior delimiting furrow punctured. Anterolateral margin yellow; line of black coarse punctures long, exceeding ½ of the margin. Scutellum with coarse, large, black punctures sparser on anterior half and median longitudinal line than on remaining parts, lateral and distal punctures small, fine and black; all punctures on dark brown spots. Corium with a few yellow veins not branched but forming a rhombus ( Fig 12G View FIGURE 12 ). Propleura with dark stripe alongside fine, dense, dark or concolorous punctures; green stripe parallel to yellow margin. Evaporatorium dark and rugose. Peritreme long reaching 2/3 of the distance between ostiole of the scent gland and margin of the body. Metasternal process greenish yellow or yellow with arms broad and receiving fourth and part of third rostral segment ( Fig. 12H View FIGURE 12 ).

Abdomen. Connexivum with excavations dark and densely punctured, except on yellow spots; base of lateral spines yellow. Lateral part of segment VII, corresponding to ventral side of connexivum, green with margin black; lateral part green vanishing to yellow on median part. Large yellow spot surrounding spiracle. Small brown rounded spot close to spiracle on each segment ( Fig. 12H View FIGURE 12 ).

Male ( Fig. 4A–C View FIGURE 4 ). Pygophore with posterolateral angles gently excavated and well projected posteriorly ( Fig. 4A View FIGURE 4 ). Superior process of the genital cup rounded and large. Paramere with large lobe distally truncate and dorsally directed; posterior lobe rounded and small ( Fig. 4B View FIGURE 4 ); posterior margin enlarged and excavated. Proctiger brown with large yellow distal stain, short, not reaching level of posterolateral angles ( Figs. 4A, C View FIGURE 4 ). Lateral excavation forming dorsally a small crest; dorsal part of posterior face bitumid. Ventral rim with median brown spot, expansions strongly developed and tumid ( Fig. 4C View FIGURE 4 ). Ventral surface predominantly greenish yellow with median dark strip and lateral pairs of dark stains; punctures concolorous with surrounding area. Phallus short and thin, distal ventral expansion conical ( Fig. 10E View FIGURE 10 ).

Female ( Fig. 4D View FIGURE 4 ). Gonocoxites 8 with lateral margin almost straight and posterior margin rounded; punctures slightly concentrated on inner half; sutural border contiguous except distally forming a "V"; gonapophysis 8 slightly visible. Gonocoxites 9 large; distal margin rounded. Laterotergites 8 with distal margin almost completely black that exceeds apex of segment VII. Laterotergites 9 with basal part excavated; black apices below the level of laterotergites 8. Capsula seminalis cylindrical and not strongly developed; processes long, exceeding anterior annular flange, with similar length, but one distally bifid ( Fig. 11E). Ductus receptaculi (tdr) short, as long as capsula seminalis.

Comments. Edessa irrorata has been described by Dallas (1851) using only one female from Colombia, but the exact number of specimens used is unknown, so we are designating the Lectotype of the species. Description of the male is presented for the first time. The specimens observed in this study don’t have the green color well preserved. One specimen has metasternal process green with lateral sides lighter than ventral side, like in P. variegata . The original description mentioned pronotum and scutellum testaceous and breast (metasternal process) yellow. Comparing with my material, the specimen described by Dallas had the coloration degraded. So we still need a better preserved or fresh specimen to be sure about the real coloration of the body.

Distribution ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 ). COSTA RICA: Puntarenas. PANAMA: Colón, Panama. GUIANA FRANCESA: St. Laurent du Maroni.
