Sinella yunnanica sp. nov.

( Figures 5–6 View Figure 5 View Figure 6 )

Types

Holotype. Female on slide, China, Yunnan, Zhenxiong, Da Hei Dong (cave), 20 August 1999, coll. J. Lips (Lips-538) . Paratypes. Four females on slide and four in alcohol, same data as holotype. Holotype and three paratypes deposited in NJU and others in MNHN .

Description

Body length up to 1.9 mm. Body white.

Antenna 2.1–2.3 times as long as cephalic diagonal. Antennal segments ratio as I: II: III: IV = 1: 1.6: 1.5: 2.6 ( Figure 5A View Figure 5 ). Long smooth straight chaetae absent on antennae. Smooth spiny microchaetae three dorsal and three ventral at base of Ant. I ( Figure 5B View Figure 5 ). Types 1, 3, 4, 6 of antennal chaetae described for S. lipsae also present but their number difficult to check. Ant. III organ with chaetae 2 and 3 rod-like, only chaeta 5 shorter than 2, chaetae 4 and 8 slightly thicker than others ( Figure 5C View Figure 5 ).

Eyes absent. Lateral process of labial palp straight, thicker than normal chaetae, with tip beyond apex of labial papilla ( Figure 5D View Figure 5 ). Subapical chaeta of maxillary outer lobe slightly longer and thicker than apical one; three smooth sublobal hairs on maxillary outer lobe. Labial chaetae as MREL 1 L 2, all smooth; R 0.15–0.20 length of chaeta M; chaetae X, X 2 and X 4 as smooth microchaetae; chaeta X 3 absent ( Figure 5E View Figure 5 ). Dorsal cephalic chaetotaxy with five sutural (S) and four macrochaetae in Gr. II ( Figure 5F View Figure 5 ).

Th. II ( Figure 5G View Figure 5 ) with three (m1, m2, m2i) medio-medial, three medio-lateral (m4, m4i, m4p), 17–22 posterior macrochaetae and three lateral s-chaetae; p2ep2 sometimes as a meso- or microchaeta. Th. III ( Figure 5H View Figure 5 ) with 26–29 macrochaetae and two s-chaetae; p3p rarely present (found in one specimen among 5); m7 as a mesochaeta.

Trochanteral organ with 17–22 smooth spiny chaetae; 10–11 in arms and 6–12 between arms ( Figure 5I View Figure 5 ). Inner differentiated tibiotarsal chaetae “smooth” with ciliations closely appressed to axis; inner outstanding macrochaetae located at about 0.33 distance from base, ciliate and tapered at tip. Unguis slender, with three inner teeth; basal unequal paired ones at 0.5 distance from base, outer one large; distal one at 0.7 distance from base. Unguiculus outer tooth large. Tenent hair clavate on hind Tita and pointed on other two Tita; all slightly longer than unguiculus ( Figure 5J View Figure 5 ).

Abd. IV 3.0–5.0 times as Abd. III in length along dorsal midline. Abd. I with 6–7 central macrochaetae, three lateral mesochaetae (p6, m6, m6e) and two s-chaetae; a5i often absent ( Figure 6A View Figure 6 ). Abd. II with three (m3, m33, m3ep) central and one (m5) lateral macrochaetae ( Figure 6B View Figure 6 ). Abd. III with one (m3) central, three (am6, pm6, p6) lateral macrochaetae and three s-chaetae ( Figure 6C View Figure 6 ). Abd. IV with five (A3, A6, B4–5, C1?) dorso-central, five (F1, E2p, E2–4) lateral macrochaetae and about 20 schaetae ( Figure 6D View Figure 6 ). Abd. V with three s-chaetae. Tenaculum with 4 + 4 teeth and one large striate chaeta. Ventral tube anteriorly with about eight ciliate chaetae on each side ( Figure 6E View Figure 6 ); posteriorly with 10–12 smooth chaetae ( Figure 6F View Figure 6 ); each lateral flap with 7–10 smooth chaetae ( Figure 6G View Figure 6 ). Manubrial plaque with two pseudopores and three ciliate chaetae ( Figure 6H View Figure 6 ). Distal smooth part of dens 1.8–2.2 times length of mucro. Mucro bidentate with basal spine long, its tip nearly reaching apex of apical tooth ( Figure 6I View Figure 6 ).

Ecology

Troglobiont, only found in cave habitats.

Etymology

Named after the province of the type locality (Yunnan)

Remarks

This new species is not a typically troglobiotic one from morphology, although it is so far only found in one cave. It is characterized by smooth microchaetae R, X, X 2 and X 4 on ventral side of the head, comparatively thin and short internal sensilla on Ant. III organ, absence of macrochaetae A4, B6 and D3 on Abd. IV, strongly clavate tentent hair on hind leg, and long mucronal basal spine.
