Telemiades warreni Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande , sp. nov.

( Figs 92, 93 View FIGURES 78–95 , 164 View FIGURES 161–165 , 213 View FIGURE 213 )

Diagnosis. Telemiades warreni Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande , sp. nov. is distinguished from the other species of the “ epicalus group” by the ground color yellow and darker spots on both wings, and from T. mielkei by the posterior margin of tegumen with two pairs of symmetric lateral apophysis.

Description. Head: frons and vertex dark brown, with yellow scales. Eyes surrounded by yellow scales. Labial palpi with first and second segments dark brown with yellow and white scales; third segment dark brown. Antennae dark brown, base of each segment cream, apiculus ventrally cream; nudum of 26 segments.

Thorax: dorsally and ventrally dark brown with yellow scales.

FW: length of males 22 mm (n=1). DFW ( Fig. 92 View FIGURES 78–95 ): ground color yellow; four dark brown spots: two cellular (upper and lower) and two discal in CuA 1 –CuA 2 and CuA 2 –2A; three apical rectangular spots in R 3 –R 4, R 4 –R 5, and R 5 –M 1; five dark brown submarginal spots as an irregular band in M 1 –M 2, M 2 –M 3, M 3 –CuA 1, CuA 1 –CuA 2, and CuA 2 –2A.

DHW ( Fig. 92 View FIGURES 78–95 ): ground color yellow; four dark brown discal spots in Sc+Rs–R1, upper cell, lower cell, and CuA 2 –2A, the last one smaller; six dark brown submarginal spots as an irregular band in Rs–M 1, M 1 –M 2, M 2 –M 3, M 3 –CuA 1, CuA 1 –CuA 2, and CuA 2 –2A.

VFW ( Fig. 93 View FIGURES 78–95 ): as DFW; ground color brown with yellow sparse scales at costal third.

VHW ( Fig. 93 View FIGURES 78–95 ): as DHW; ground color brown with yellow sparse scales.

Abdome: dorsally and ventrally dark brown and yellow.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 164 View FIGURES 161–165 ): tegumen rectangular, posterior margin with two pairs of symmetric lateral apophysis. Anterior projection of saccus triangular, anterior margin rounded. Uncus rectangular, almost same size as tegumen, distal margin concave, forming two small lateral projections; lateral margin slightly expanded. Valva rectangular, twice as long as wide; costa rounded, covered by small spines on internal margin; distal margin rounded and serrated; dorso–distal projection as a triangular process; sacculus rectangular, about 1/2 the length of valva. Fultura inferior distally bifid, with distal margin rounded. Aedeagus cylindrical, slightly sinuous on proximal half; insertion of manica in third proximal of aedeagus; opening for ejaculatory bulb rounded; distal margin rounded; opening for vesica dorsal and lateral left, about 1/2 of size of aedeagus; cornuti forming two lines of sharp and conic spines, the first line with small spines located at third proximal, and second line with spines more developed and located at central region of aedeagus.

Female unknown.

Distribution. Telemiades warreni , sp. nov. is known only from a single male specimen collected at Rodríguez de Mendoza, Amazonas, Peru, 1.800 m a.s.l.

Etymology. This species is dedicated to our friend Andrew David Warren for his contribution to the study of the Neotropical skippers, and for his support during the development of this study.

Taxonomic discussion. Telemiades warreni , sp. nov. is immediately recognizable by the ground color yellow and darker spots on both wings. The morphology of the male genitalia differs from the other species of the “ epicalus group”. As far as it is known, T. warreni , sp. nov. is the only species of the “ epicalus group” that occurs as high as 1.800 m.

Type material. Holotype male deposited at DZUP–OM with the following labels : / HOLOTYPUS / 30–VIII– 2003 RODRIGUEZ DE MENDOZA, AMAZONAS PERU, 1800 m / OM 63.717 / Holotypus Telemiades warreni Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/.
