ETYMOLOGY„ From the Latin floccus (tuft of hairs), suggesting the setose dactyli of P2-4 characteristic of the new species.

DISTRIBUTION„ New Caledonia, Loyalty Ridge, Isle of Pines, Hunter and Matthew islands and Norfolk Ridge; 180- 880 m.

SIZE„ Males, 2.1-5.1 mm; females, 2.3-5.2 mm; ovigerous females from 2.3 mm.

DESCRIPTION„ Small species. Carapace: Slightly broader than long (0.9 × as long as broad); greatest breadth 1.4- 1.5 × distance between anterolateral spines. Dorsal surface smooth, somewhat convex from anterior to posterior, with transverse depression suggesting cervical groove; epigastric region with transverse row of 9 small spines preceded by depressed rostrum. Lateral margins somewhat convex, with 6 acute spines: first anterolateral, directed anterolaterally, terminating in or slightly overreaching tip of much smaller lateral orbital spine; second smaller than first, located on hepatic region, ventral to level of other spines; third to sixth on branchial region, all strong, much larger than second and equidistantly arranged; last spine followed by ridge. Rostrum sharp triangular, with interior angle of 20-30°, straight horizontal; length 0.5-0.6 × postorbital carapace length, breadth half carapace breadth measured at posterior carapace margin; dorsal surface concave; lateral margin often with a few small denticles distally. Lateral orbital spine situated anterior to level of anterolateral spine. Pterygostomian flap anteriorly roundish, with sharply produced anterior spine followed by 2 small spines usually distinct, rarely obsolescent on anterior median surface, and another spine usually present (very rarely absent) directly below linea anomurica between second and third marginal spines of carapace.

Sternum: Excavated sternum bluntly produced anteriorly between bases of Mxp1 but often broad triangular, surface with ridge in midline on anterior half. Sternal plastron slightly broader than long, lateral extremities gently divergent posteriorly. Sternite 3 depressed well; anterior margin moderately convex, with deep U- or V-shaped median notch without flanking spine, laterally sharp angular. Sternite 4 with anterolateral margin convex, anteriorly sharp angular, posterolateral margin slightly longer than anterolateral margin. Anterolateral margin of somite 5 anteriorly rounded, slightly more than half as long as posterolateral margin of sternite 4.

Abdomen: Barely setose, somites relatively long. Somite 1 dorsally strongly convex from anterior to posterior. Somite 2 tergite 2.6-2.7 × broader than long; pleuron posterolaterally rounded, lateral margin concave and gently divergent posteriorly. Pleuron of somite 3 posterolaterally rounded. Telson nearly half as long as broad or slightly less than so; posterior plate 1.1-1.3 × longer than anterior plate, posterior margin nearly transverse or slightly convex.

Eye: Somewhat elongate (length 1.8 × breadth), slightly or distinctly broadened proximally, slightly overreaching midlength of rostrum. Cornea not dilated, more than half length of remaining eyestalk.

Antennule and antenna: Ultimate antennular article 3.3-3.8 × longer than high. Antennal peduncle overreaching cornea, slightly falling short of rostral tip. Article 2 with strong distolateral spine. Antennal scale distally sharp, terminating in or slightly overreaching distal end of article 5, occasionally bearing small spine on proximal lateral margin, breadth slightly more than 1.5 × that of article 5. Article 4 with distinct distomesial spine. Article 5 1.2 × longer than article 4, distomesially bearing small, often obsolescent spine, breadth two-thirds to half height of ultimate antennular article. Flagellum of 12-15 (usually 12 or 13) segments barely reaching distal end of P1 merus.

Mxp: Mxp1 with bases close to each other but not contiguous. Mxp3 basis usually unarmed, occasionally with 2 or 3 obsolescent denticles on mesial ridge. Ischium with distally rounded flexor margin, crista dentata with obsolescent denticles. Merus and carpus each with distolateral spine; merus 1.8-1.9 × longer than ischium, mesial face flattish, flexor margin with 2 small spines distal to point two-thirds of length.

P1: Slender, more than 6 × longer than carapace in large specimens; sparingly with short soft setae on merus and carpus, sparsely on palm, and more numerous longer setae on fingers. Ischium dorsally bearing basally broad, compressed, strong spine, ventromesially bearing strong subterminal spine proximally followed by a few to a number of proximally diminishing spines. Merus with row of 4 basally broad, equidistant ventromesial spines and field of 3 smaller mesioproximal spines; length 1.3-1.6 × that of carapace. Carpus 1.5-1.8 × longer than merus. Palm 3.6-4.5 × (males), 4.6-7.2 × (females) longer than broad, nearly as long as or slightly longer than carpus. Fingers gaping in large specimens of both sexes, tapering and slightly incurved distally, crossing when closed; movable finger 0.3-0.4 × length of palm, opposable margin with broad, low process on proximal half in both sexes.

P2-4: Slender, well compressed mesio-laterally. Meri successively shorter posteriorly (P3 merus 0.9 × length of P2 merus, P4 merus 0.8-0.9 × length of P3 merus); length-breadth ratio, 5.3-6.0 on P2, 4.0-4.9 on P3, 3.0-3.8 on P4; dorsal margins unarmed; P2 merus slightly shorter than, occasionally as long as or slightly longer than carapace, slightly narrower than P3-4 meri, 1.3-1.7 × longer than P2 propodus; P3 merus subequal to length of P3 propodus; P4 merus as broad as P3 merus, 0.8 × length of P4 propodus. P2-4 carpi subequal or P2 carpus slightly shorter; carpus-propodus length ratio, 0.4 on P2, 0.3-0.4 on P3 and P4. Propodi successively longer posteriorly, more slender on P2 than on P3 and P4; flexor margin straight, ending in pair of terminal spines preceded by 5-6 spines on P2, 3-5 spines on P3-4. Dactyli much more slender and shorter on P2 than on P3 and P4, length 0.6-0.7 × that of propodus on P2 and P3, 0.5-0.7 × on P4, and 1.3 × that of carpus on P2, 1.7-1.9 × on P3, 1.7-1.8 × on P4; flexor margin nearly straight, with 14-17 spines on P2, 17-19 spines on P3 and P4, penultimate much broader (about 2 × broader than antepenultimate), remaining spines slender, strongly inclined, close to one another, obscured by dense setae particularly on P2.

Eggs. Number of eggs carried, 5-22; size, 0.81 mm × 0.86 mm - 1.09 × 1.22 mm.

PARASITES — A rhizocephalan externa on the antennule was observed in the following specimens: 1 ♂ (MNHN- IU-2014-16576), 1 ov. ♀ and 1 ♀ (MNHN-IU-2014-16464), 1 ov. ♀ (MNHN-IU-2014-16562), 1 ov. ♀ (MNHN-IU-2014-16563), 1 ♂ (MNHN-IU-2014-16571).

REMARKS — This is one of the most common species around New Caledonia. The new species strongly resembles U. dualis n. sp. (see above) in the carapace spination, in having a field of three spines closely and obliquely arranged on the mesioproximal face of the P1 merus, and in having the very setose P2 dactylus. Uroptychus floccus can be differentiated from that species by the pterygostomian flap that bears a spine directly below the linea anomurica between the second and third carapace marginal spines, instead of lacking that spine; the anterolateral spine of the carapace overreaches the lateral orbital spine only slightly instead of greatly; the P2 dactylus is more slender and more setose than in U. dualis ; and the P1 merus bears four well-developed instead of two strong ventromesial spines (accompanied by one or two small proximal spines).

The spine below the linea anomurica, on the pterygostomian flap, is usually distinct in U. floccus , which helps separate the species from U. dualis n. sp. However, the spine is absent in the specimens registered under MNHN-IU-2014-16565, MNHN-IU-2014-16575, and two of the five specimens of the lot MNHN-IU-2014-16562.
