HABITAT. — En Nouvelle-Calédonie, cette espèce, la plus petite des Calanthe , ne croît que sur les troncs en décomposition.

STATUT DE CONSERVATION. — Préoccupation mineure (LC), évaluée le 28.VI.2016 (https://endemia.nc/flore/fiche3128). L’espèce est uniquement protégée en Province Nord.

NOTE L’holotype de Calanthe bigibba Schltr. (Savaii:Mataana; 4.XI.1905 – Vaupel 359) de l’herbier de Berlin a été détruit en 1943. Smith (1991) signale un double à Harvard ( AMES00106116 View Materials ). Cependant, G.A. Romero and T.Chehaibar (mss in herb. juin 1991)mentionnent que les dates ne correspondent pas. En effet, le protologue mentionne la date du 4 novembre 1905, alors que le spécimen de AMES date du 20 septembre1906. Il est possible que le spécimen soit une plante cultivée issue de la collection originelle, ce qui correspondrait à un clonotype,catégorie non reconnue par le code de nomenclature,mais souhaitée par de nombreux botanistes( Pignal& Munzinger 2020). Il est ici formellement désigné un néotype.
