The taxonomy and intraspecific morphological variations of this species are discussed in depth by Haig (1964) and Nakasone & Miyake (1971) . The variations have been known for the length-breadth ratio of the carpus of the cheliped and development of the dorsoflexor teeth, development of a tuft of plumose setae in the gape of the fingers of cheliped, and armature on the extensor margins of the meri of the amburatory legs. Distribution. Indonesia , Sulu Islands; then westward through Malay Archipelago to east coast of India ; Singapore northward to Tokara Islands, Japan ; New Guinea eastward to New Caledonia , Fiji , and Samoa ; intertidal, under rocks ( Haig 1979 ).
