Ecology: —Uncommon; epiphytic or sometimes on moss-covered rocks, in wet montane forests, cloud forests; 1950–3100 m . Notes: — Melpomene flagellata is distinguished from M. moniliformis by the ascending or erect, unbranched rhizomes ( vs . rhizomes horizontally creeping and branching in M. moniliformis ), basally tapering blades ( vs . blades not tapering), and long setiform hairs regularly present in the sori (3–12(–20) per sorus, 1.2–1.8 mm long vs . 0–5 per sorus, 0.5.–1.0 mm long).
