From the Greek brachys (short) and the generic name Tachys [ q.v .] [masculine]. Neotachys Kult, 1961: 2. Type species: Bembidium algiricum Lucas, 1846 by original designation. Synonymy established by Lindroth (1966: 424). Etymology. From the Greek neo (new) and the generic name Tachys [ q.v .] [masculine]. Polyderidius Jeannel, 1962: 611. Type species: Polyderidius rapoporti Jeannel, 1962 by original designation. Synonymy established by Erwin (1974a: 143). Diversity. Worldwide, with about 40 species in the Nearctic (three species), Neotropical (ten species), Australian (nine species), Oriental (eight species), Palaearctic (nine species), and Afrotropical (ten species) Regions. One species is also known from the Hawaiian Islands. Identification. Lindroth (1966: 424-427) treated two ( Polyderis laeva and Polyderis rufotestacea ) of the three species found in North America. Taxonomic Note. This taxon is considered a subgenus of Tachys by some authors (e.g., Lorenz 2005: 211).
