Origanum syriacum
Linnaeus
,
Species Plantarum
2
: 590. 1753
.
"Habitat - - -
-"
RCN: 4295.
Lectotype
(Paton in Jarvis & al. in
Taxon
50: 516. 2001): [icon]
"Marum syriacum"
in Plantin, Pl. Stirp. Icon.: 499. 1581.
Current name:
Origanum syriacum
L.
(
Lamiaceae
).
Note:
As pointed out by Harley (in
Watsonia
14: 86. 1982), Ietswaart (in
Leiden Bot. Ser.
4: 87. 1980) designated 743.12 (LINN) as the type of both
O. syriacum
and
O. maru
L. Harley
stated "while the sheet indicated is unquestionably the type of
O. maru
, it can hardly be the type of
O. syriacum
, which apparently does not occur among the sheets in
Linnaeus'
herbarium in London, and must be looked for elsewhere". Meikle (
Fl. Cyprus
2: 1267. 1985) stated "TYPE: Probably the illustration in Lobel...t. 499 (1591)", i.e. the Plantin illustration, but his use of the word
"probably"
contradicts Art. 7.11 of the Code.
