Diagnosis. Head almost holoptic in male, dichoptic in female; parafacial with rather dense and long hairs; pedicel with a long seta at most 3/4 as long as pedicel; arista short plumose; palpus black; 0–1 presutural and 1 postsutural acrostichal setae; 2 presutural and 3 postsutural dorsocentral setae; 2 katepisternal setae; mid tibia with 3 anterodorsal setae; hind tibia with 3–4 preapical dorsal setae; male claws and pulvilli long; abdomen with a complete row of discal setae on 3rd to 5th tergites.

Description. Body length: 8.0– 9.3 mm.

Male. Head with dense, grayish-white pruinosity, more whitish on lower parafacial and gena, dark grayish on occiput; antenna black except dark brown arista; palpus black. Nearly holoptic, eyes close in front of ocellar triangle; frons at narrowest point about 1/12 of head width; eye bare; face about 2/3 as long as frons in profile; parafacial wide, about twice as wide as postpedicel; gena about 0.4 of eye height, without genal dilation. Inner vertical seta fine, 2/5 as long as eye height; prevertical and proclinate orbital setae absent; 8–9 frontal setae on lower 2/3 of frons; fronto-orbital plate with rather dense, long, black hairs on lower 2/3; parafacial with 3–4 rows of rather dense, long, black hairs; gena with a row of several fine short, black hairs on lower margin; occiput with dense, black hairs, pale yellowish-white hairs confined to narrow ventromedian portion. Base of antenna nearly level with lower 1/3 of eye height; antenna falling short of lower margin of face by about length of pedicel; pedicel with a long seta about 4/5 as long as postpedicel; postpedicel about 3 times as long as pedicel; arista short plumose, total width including plumosity less than 1/2 of width of postpedicel. Palpus nearly as long as postpedicel.

Thorax black in ground color, with thin, grayish pruinosity, a broad dark brownish median longitudinal vitta visible on postsutural scutum when seen from behind. Zero or 1 presutural and 1 postsutural acrostichal setae; 2 presutural and 3 postsutural dorsocentral setae; 2 postsutural intra-alar setae; 2 katepisternal setae; scutellum with 3 pairs of marginal setae, basal setae about 1.5 times as long as scutellum and apical setae slightly shorter than basal setae. Wing hyaline, evenly and weakly tinged with pale brown; lower calypter pale yellowish-white, broadly emarginated with pale brownish-yellow; costal spine subequal in length to r-m crossvein; costa bare above and haired below; relative lengths of costal sectors 2, 3 and 4 approximately 1:4:1.5; bend of vein M 1 2.5 times closer to wing margin than to dm-cu crossvein; last section of vein CuA 1 about 4/5 as long as dm-cu crossvein. Legs black; fore tibia with a row of anterodorsal setae and 2 posterior setae; mid tibia with 3 anterodorsal, 2 posterodorsal and 1 ventral setae; hind tibia with 3–4 (normally 3?) preapical dorsal setae; fore claws and pulvilli longer than 5th tarsomere.

Abdomen black in ground color, with grayish-white pruinosity on 3rd to 5th tergites, the pruinosity dense on anterior 1/3 of 3rd tergite, rather dense on anterior 1/3 of 4th tergite and thin on other dorsal portions; broad middorsal brownish longitudinal vitta distinct on 3rd to 5th tergites. Rather short fusiform; syntergite 1+2 with a pair of median discal setae, 1–2 lateral discal setae and a row of marginal setae; 3rd to 5th tergites each with a row of strong marginal setae a row of discal setae; 5th sternite with posterior lobe rather strongly and sharply pointed at postero-interior corner. Terminalia: Sixth tergite concave on posterior margin, without hairs; surstylus rather broad and evenly narrowed to apex in lateral view, with rather long hairs; cerci in dorsal view broad along basal 1/3 then strongly narrowed to apex, suture distinct along basal 5/6 and narrowly separated along apical 1/6, in lateral view concave along basal 1/3 then curved ventrally, apex weakly reflexed; pregonite nearly flat; epiphallus about 1/2 as long as basiphallus, distiphallus with dorsal sclerite strongly curved posteriorly at apex, apical membranous portion nearly as long as basal sclerotized portion.

Female. Differing from male as follows: Head dichoptic; vertex about 0.29 of head width; inner vertical setae strong, nearly parallel to each other, about 4/5 as long as eye height; outer vertical seta well developed, about 2/3 as long as inner vertical seta; ocellar setae about 1/2 as long as inner vertical seta; 1 outwardly-directed prevertical seta, slightly longer than outer vertical seta; 2 proclinate orbital setae, anterior seta slightly longer than inner vertical seta and subequal in length to outer vertical seta; hairs on fronto-orbital plate and parafacial rather shorter and sparser; gena about 0.5 of eye height; postpedicel about 2.5 times as long as pedicel; claws and pulvilli distinctly shorter than 5th tarsomere; abdomen shiny black, with dense, whitish pruinosity on narrow anterolateral portion of 3rd tergite and thin, whitish pruinosity on narrow anterolateral margin of 4th tergite. Terminalia: 6th tergite about 1.5 times as long as 7th, narrowly divided mid-dorsally into hemitergites, with a row of strong hairs marginally; 6th sternite with short setae on posterior margin; 7th tergite divided into nearly rectangular hemitergites, with a few setae; 7th sternite about 2/3 as long as 6th sternite, with a row of short marginal setae; 8th hemitergite rather long on upper portion, fused with hypoproct posteromedially, very short on lower portion and fused with 8th sternite.

First instar larva. Body length: 1.00– 1.05 mm; cephaloskeleton broad on apical 1/2, narrowed to apex, dorsal margin rather weakly convex at apical 1/2; 2nd thoracic segment with 2–3 rows of fine anterodorsal spinules; 7th abdominal segment without posterodorsal row of spinules.

Type material. Holotype ♂: China / Yunnan Deqen Pr. / 50 km SE Deqen / 3400 m, 22.viii. / 1996, H. Shima ( IZCAS).

Paratype: 1 ♀, same data as holotype ( KUM) .

Etymology. This species is named in honor of the late Professor Chao Chien-ming, a pioneer of tachinid systematics in China.

Distribution. China (Yunnan).

Remarks. This is a rather short, black species of this genus. It resembles P. annularis in general facies, but is easily distinguished from it by the bare eye, slightly wider male frons and long face.
