Australophiotaenia
status

gen. nov.

Australophiotaenia sp. 11

Syn. Proteocephalus sp. of Johnston (1912)

Host. Northern black snake Pseudechis australis (Gray) ( Ophidia : Elapidae ).

Distribution. Australia (Queensland).

Material studied. None.

Remarks. Johnston (1912) reported Proteocephalus sp. from P. australis from Eidsvold, Burnett River, Queensland, stating it is not conspecific with P. gallardi (= A. gallardi ), but assumed it is the identical species as that reported as Ichthyotaenia sp. by Johnston (1910) from Denisonia superba . However, the same author ( Johnston, 1913) assigned all tapeworms to P. gallardi (see also de Chambrier & de Chambrier, 2010). No voucher material is known to exist.
