Anisotremus surinamensis (Bloch 1791) View in CoL

Extant specimens: MCUC ZOO.0000068 ( Fig. 44 View FIGURE 44 ).

Classification on the specimen: “P. Th. Perca sparoidea ”.

Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): “Sargo”/ “Guaibiaia”.

Comments: This species was undescribed at the time Veloso prepared it. Perca sparoidea was not an available species name at the time of Veloso, and probably he intended to describe it. However, no description that fits this species could be found in the Ichthyologia Fluminensis manuscript. The Ajuda’s inventory ( Ferreira 1794) lists 79 herborized specimens of Perca , but no Perca sparoidea is listed in the transference to the University of Coimbra. Two specimens are mentioned in the transference to the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, but no specimen was found. The common name “sargo-de-beiço” is used for this species in some parts of Brazil. Anisotremus surinamensis occurs in the Western Atlantic from Florida ( USA) to São Paulo ( Brazil) ( Menezes & Figueiredo 1980; Lindeman & Toxey 2002).
