Colletes ornatus Schrottky, 1902 View in CoL

Colletes ornatus Schrottky, 1902 View in CoL . Holotype ♀ in MZUSP, examined. Type locality: Brazil, São Paulo, Jundiaí.

Diagnosis. Colletes ornatus is a little similar to C. altimontanus , but can be distinguished from it by the characters emphasized in the diagnosis for the latter (see above). Furthermore, C. ornatus is the only species of Colletes known to occur in Minas Gerais with a bright-orange tuft of hairs on pronotal lobe, contrasting with the paleyellow remaining pilosity on the dorsal surface of mesossoma.

♀/♂—labrum black, impunctate, but with longitudinal sulci; clypeus with mid-longitudinal depression; hypostomal carina forming a high, concave lamella; mid-posterior region of mesoscutum with large, smooth impunctate area; ventral region of mesepisternum, near ventral end of episternal groove, without swollen area surrounded by hairs; marginal zone of T1 flat.

♀—malar area 0.65 times as long as interocellar distance; clypeus coarsely rugose; F1 only slightly longer than its apical width; gena, behind the upper eye margin, concave but not carinate posteriorly; anterolateral angle of pronotum spiniform, at least as long as its basal width; pilosity on mesoscutum, except antero-lateral area, paleyellow; pilosity on mesepisternum, ventrally, sparse; fore coxa bearing a spine; punctation on T1 sparse and moderately coarse.

♂—malar area 0.85 times as long as interocellar distance; F1 slightly shorter than its apical width; gena, behind the upper eye margin, concave but not carinate posteriorly; anterolateral angle of pronotum spiniform, at least as long as its basal width; pilosity on mesoscutum pale-yellow; pilosity on mesepisternum, ventrally, sparse; fore coxa without spine; inner spur of hind tibia serrate; punctation on T1 moderately coarse and dense, generally more sparsely punctate disc.

Comments. Colletes ornatus was included as one of the drawings in the paper by Schrottky (1902), and this author thus described it (our translation from Portuguese): “Black; white-haired head; clypeus with some punctures and a mid-longitudinal groove; the antennae black. Mesonotum finely punctate, the scutellum with finer punctures, pilosity on both, fuscous. Anteriorly to the tegulae, there is a patch of long, orange hairs on each side, giving the insect a very beautiful appearance. Abdomen almost glabrous; the thorax ventrally, white-haired; legs fuscous, white-haired; scopa on hind femora somewhat yellowish. Tegulae testaceous; wings hyaline, the veins fuscous. Length 10 mm.” ( Schrottky 1902:345–346).
