Dohrniphora ignobilis Borgmeier View in CoL

( Figs 145–146)

Dohrniphora ignobilis Borgmeier, 1960: 279 View in CoL , fig. 31. Holotype. ♂, BRAZIL: Rio de Janeiro: Petrópolis , 13.xi.1950, T. Borgmeier [LACM ENT 271206 View Materials ] (MZSP; examined).

Species recognition. This species is recognized by the rounded lobe ventral to the peglike setae. It is most similar to D. heliconiae View in CoL , but is easily distinguished by the light-colored scutum and the presence of the ventral lobe.

The older specimens of this species are all much darker in color than the newly collected material, probably due to differing preservation techniques; older specimens were air-dried and tend to darken. Unfortunately, there is no new material from Brazil to check to see if specimens from the type locality are truly as light-colored as others we examined.

Description. Note that the colors of the older specimens are darker than those of more recently collected material. This description is based on the newer material. Body length: 1.56–2.09 mm. Head: Frons brown, second row of setae concave. Flagellomere 1 rounded-oval, yellow to light brown. Palpus of normal size, yellow. Thorax: Scutum light brown. Scutellum brown, with 2 pairs of setae; anterior seta one-half length of posterior seta. Pleuron whitish-yellow ventrally to light brown dorsally. Mean costal length 0.5 wing length, range 0.48–0.53. Halter whitish-yellow. Legs yellowish-brown. Forecoxa in lateral view yellow. Foretibia with 3 dorsal setae. Foretarsomeres slender, elongate. Midcoxa darker yellow. Hind coxa whitish-yellow. Hind coxal lobe yellow, short, with short, dorsally-curved ventral process. Posterior face of hind femur with basal group of peglike setae, often with some missing from center; ventral margin of femur convex below setae, forming rounded lobe; concavity oval, filled with spinuli; white membranous area oval ( Figs 145–146). Abdomen: Abdominal tergite 1 brown, tergites 2–6 mostly yellow medially and dark brown laterally in tergite 2, yellow area decreasing in each subsequent tergite; tergites 5–6 often completely brown. Venter of abdomen whitish-yellow, with few setae, larger on posterior margin of segment 5. Male terminalia with epandrium yellowish-brown, hypandrium brown, and cercus yellow.

Distribution. South America, West Indies. We did not record this species in our earlier paper on Caribbean Dohrniphora ( Kung & Brown 2006) .

Other material examined. 30♂ specimens from the following localities: BRAZIL: Minas Gerais: Teófilo Ottoni ; Rio de Janeiro: Petrópolis, Itatiaya ( MZSP) . COLOMBIA: Amazonas: Leticia, PNN Amacayacu ; Vichada: PNN El Tuparro ( LACM, IAVH) . FRENCH GUIANA: L’Oyapock: St. Georges de l’Oyapock ( LACM) . WEST INDIES: Grenada: Grand Etang ( DEBU, LACM) .
