( Figs. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 3 , 9 View FIGURES 4 – 9 , 15 View FIGURES 10 – 15 , 21 View FIGURES 16 – 21 )

Material. Holotype: 3, Malaysia, Sarawak, Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, Sungai Begua, 18–VI–2008, leg. CYC & YFN. Paratypes (all from Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary): 4 3, data as holotype; 1 3, Sungai Begua, 23–VI– 2008, leg. CYC & YFN; 1 3, Sungai Begua, 23–VI–2008, leg. H. Takizawa. Holotype to be deposited in RMNH, paratypes in coll. Dow and coll. CYC.

Etymology: Mauros , an adjective, from the Greek, meaning dark.

Description of holotype male. Head: Black except as noted. Labium very dark brown except on the postmentum, where mottled dark brown and brownish cream. A pair of semi-circular pale marks basally on either side of the labrum. Genae partly brown. A pale stripe at the top of the mandible bases and an irregular pale area in the free corner. A faint but broad grey band between the eyes dorsally ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ). Top of scape pale, top of pedicel brown. Median ocellus orange, lateral ocelli are dark brown. Extensive greyish white pruinescence on occiput.

Thorax: Prothorax black with greyish pruinescence covering the propleuron, a dark brown patch on each half of the median pronotal lobe. Synthorax largely bronzy black. Mesepisternum with a greenish tinge except for a pair of extremely faint and indistinct brownish antehumeral stripes (barely visible over most of their length) extending over ca 2/ 3 of the length. Some indistinct brown areas on the metepisternum, especially around spiracle. Venter black except the posternum, where obscurely brown and pale. Greyish pruinescence on lower part of metepisternum, metepimeron, mes- and metinfraepisternum and on venter, where thick and whitish. Legs largely black or very dark brown except for upper parts of trochanters, which are pale, a pale patch on the flexor surface of the femur just below the trochanter and the lower ca 3/4 of the extensor surface of the tibia, where brown. Pruinescence on the coxa, and thinly on trochanter, femur and upper part of flexor surface of tibia. Wings: Venation typical for genus, with 16 Px in Fw, 14 in Hw, last Px incomplete in all wings. Pt oblique, brown with a narrow paler border, costal side longer than anal, covering slightly more than one underlying cell and longer than deep.

Abdomen: Black with grey pruinescence dorsally on S1, ventrally on S7–8, ventrally and laterally on S9 and over all of S10, and on paraprocts. Tip of cercus, and part of dorsal surface, brown. Cercus short, just longer than S10 measured at the level of the cercus, with large basal ventral tooth ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 4 – 9 ). Paraprocts square-ended in lateral view, with a prominent semicircular projection just below the cercus ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 4 – 9 ), folded dorsally towards tip, where they appear rounded ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 10 – 15 ) and with a broad subapical ventral spur, directed inwards and distally ( Figs. 15 View FIGURES 10 – 15 , 21 View FIGURES 16 – 21 ).

Measurements (mm): Abdomen ca 31.25 without caudal appendages, 31.5 with caudal appendages. Hw 20.

Variation in paratypes. The extent and thickness of the pruinescence varies, presumably with age; the holotype is a mature example, on several of the paratypes the pruinescence is thinner and less extensive. Similarly the Pt is paler in some specimens. The size of the pale markings on the labrum is variable; on one immature specimen they occupy most of the basal 2/3. The extent of brown and pale markings on the genae and/or mandible bases is variable. One immature specimen has the band between the eyes pale blue and much better defined than in the holotype. The antehumeral stripes are always very faint and indistinct, but they are slightly easier to see in some specimens; one specimen has a more distinct pale streak within the antehumeral stripe on the right side. Two specimens have very irregular faint pale blue markings on the metepisternum on one or both sides. There are 15–16 Px in the Fw, 13–14 in Hw. Pt covers one or just less than one underlying cell in some wings of some specimens.

Measurements (mm): Abdomen without appendages 30–33, Hw 19–21.

Diagnosis. A black Elattoneura , easily separated from all regional species except E. coomansi and E. erythromma by its colouration, from E. erythromma by the colour of the eyes in life (red in E. erythromma ), colouration of the synthorax laterally and the structure of the caudal appendages, and from E. coomansi by the structure of the caudal appendages and the presence of a pale band between the eyes (albeit very faint in most individuals).

Remarks. The genital ligula has not been figured for any Southeast Asian species of Elattoneura . The authors plan to make a thorough revision of the genus in Sundaland; it was decided to wait for this project before examining the ligula of E. mauros , rather than describing it in isolation here.
