Lygrocharis setosus View in CoL sp. nov. ( Figs. 9–12 View FIGURES 9 – 12 )

Description. Male. Head and prosternum black; mouthparts yellowish to reddish-brown; scape, pedicel and antennomeres III–VI reddish-brown; antennomeres VI–XI yellowish-brown; pronotum dark reddish-brown; sides of prothorax dark reddish-brown, darker brown on basal and anterior regions; most of ventral side of mesothorax dark-brown; most of ventral side of metathorax brown, more reddish toward apex; elytra reddish-brown with some regions more brownish, mainly on distal half; femoral peduncle yellowish on base, gradually reddish-brown toward femoral club; femoral club brown; pro- and mesotibiae light reddish-brown on base, gradually brown toward apex; metatibiae yellowish on basal 2/3, brown on distal third; pro- and mesotarsi brown; metatarsomere I mostly yellowish-brown, with base and apex more reddish; metatarsomeres II-V reddish-brown; abdomen mostly brown. Pubescence yellowish, more whitish depending on angle of light.

Head. Basal area not elongate behind eyes (distance between posterior margin of eyes and prothoracic margin equal to width of upper eye lobes); rostrum (area between lower eye lobe and apex of gena), viewed from front, short (about 0.4 times length of lower eye lobe). Frons finely, abundantly punctate, except for smooth longitudinal region in middle (punctures slightly sparser toward antennal tubercles); with short, moderately sparse setae. Area between antennal tubercles and upper eyes lobes finely, abundantly punctate; with short, abundant (primarily in middle) setae. Area between upper eye lobes and prothorax finely, sparsely punctate close to eyes, punctate-striate close to prothorax; with short, abundant setae on punctate region, very sparse on punctate-striate region. Antennal tubercles with sculpture and setae as on frons (smoother toward upper eye lobes). Clypeus finely, abundantly punctate, with short setae, except for smooth, glabrous at sides and area closer to labrum; with one long, erect seta on each side of punctate region. Area behind eyes finely, abundantly punctate close to eyes, sparsely punctate close to prothorax, smooth between these two areas on region behind lower eye lobes; with short, abundant setae interspersed with long, erect setae close to lower eye lobes. Gula smooth, glabrous. Submentum rugose-punctate; with short, sparse setae interspersed with long, erect setae. Genae very finely punctate; with short, dense setae close to eyes, glabrous near apex. Distance between upper eye lobes 0.75 times length of scape; in frontal view, distance between lower eye lobes in frontal view 0.95 times length of scape. Antennae 1.2 times length of elytral, reaching middle of abdominal ventrite III; antennal formula (ratio) based on antennomere III: scape = 0.65; pedicel = 0.22; IV = 0.58; V = 0.63; VI = 0.74; VII = 0.61; VIII = 0.52; IX = 0.48; X = 0.39; XI = 0.43.

Thorax. Prothorax subcylindrical, distinctly widened about middle, slightly longer than wide (1.1 times). Pronotum with five gibbosities on basal half, one longitudinal, at middle, one on each side near base, and one oblique on each side near middle of pronotum; lateral gibbosities on each side of longitudinal one sub-fused.

Pronotal surface finely, abundantly punctate, except for sub-smooth area on gibbosities; pubescents, nearly glabrous on gibbosities (primarily on central and anterior gibbosities), and with long, erect, sparse setae. Sides of prothorax finely, abundantly punctate, pubescent, except for transversely striate and subglabrous anterior region. Prosternum finely, abundantly punctate in middle at base, sparsely punctate on remaining surface; pubescent laterally, and with setae distinctly sparser in middle triangular area (setae more abundant basally). Procoxal cavities closed behind. Metepisterna and metasternum pubescent but not obscuring integument. Scutellum pubescent. Elytra. Slightly narrowed from base to about middle; apex rounded; with distinct carina at center of distal fifth; coarsely, moderately abundantly punctate, punctures slightly finer toward apex; with short, sparse setae, denser at apex and on each side of distal carina, interspersed with long, erect, sparse setae on basal third. Legs. Metatarsomere I 1.3 times longer than II–III together.

Abdomen. Ventrites pubescent, interspersed with some long, erect setae. Apex of ventrite V truncate

Female. Head mostly dark reddish-brown dorsally; all antennal segments reddish-brown. In frontal view, distance between lower eye lobes 1.1 times length of scape. Apex of abdominal ventrite V slightly rounded.

Dimensions in mm (holotype male/ paratype female). Total length, 4.20/4.90; prothorax: length, 0.95/1.00; anterior width, 0.65/0.70; posterior width, 0.60/0.65; widest prothoracic width, 0.80/0.80; humeral width, 0.80/ 0.90; elytral length, 2.70/3.10.

Type material. Holotype female (CASC), paratype female ( LGBC) from ECUADOR, Loja: 18.5 km N Gonzanama (04°08’08.5”S / 79°23’36.4”W), 22.II.2006, F. T. Hovore & I. Swift col. GoogleMaps

Etymology. The specific epithet setosus , refers to the abundant setae on the pronotum.

Remarks. Lygrocharis setosus sp. nov. differs from L. neivai Melzer, 1927 , and L. nigripennis Mendes, 1938 , by the prothorax being proportionally larger and wider anteriorly than basally (see photographs of the types of these species at Bezark 2016). However, the new species does share the distinctly separated lower eyes lobes of males, the closed procoxal cavities, and the carinate apical fifth of the elytra, with these species.
