Megaselia apozona Schmitz View in CoL

( Figure 20 View Figure 20 )

Megaselia apozona Schmitz, 1936 .

Megaselia subfuscipes Disney et al., 1990 View in CoL , not Schmitz, 1935. Disney, 2000.

This species is very close to M. subfuscipes View in CoL , and may possibly be a subspecies of the latter. Furthermore it is somewhat variable. For example, the haltere knob is typically brown, but occasionally it is straw yellow. Clarification of the recognition and redescription of the male (Disney 2000) has allowed recognition of the hitherto unknown female, which is described below.

Female

Head similar to male except postpedicels are smaller (diameter in male about 0.20 mm, but only about 0.12 mm in female), consequently the similar labrum is about 0.8 times as broad as postpedicel, whereas in the male it is only about 0.4–0.5 times as broad. Thorax as male. Abdominal tergites brown with short hairs, T5–T7 being as Figure 20A View Figure 20 . Venter brownish grey, and with fewer than 40 hairs below segments 3–6. Sternite 7 absent. Posterolateral lobes at rear of sternum 8 each represented by three hairs only. Epiproct and cerci whitish yellow and latter about twice as long as broad. With four rectal papillae. Furca not apparent. Dufour’s crop mechanism about 3.8 times as long as greatest breadth and tapering from just before midpoint to its narrowly rounded rear end. Legs similar to male. Wings as male with length 1.8 mm, costal index 0.39, costal ratios 4.1: 1.5: 1, and costal cilia 0.14 mm long. Otherwise it and haltere as male.
