TYPE MATERIAL. — Holotype TA 1925 , figured by Higo et al. (2001: 67 G2424).

TYPE LOCALITY. — Tosa Bay , Kōchi Prefecture, Shikoku, Japan, 180 m.

MATERIAL EXAMINED.— New Caledonia proper. MUSORSTOM 550 m, 1 dd (Fig. 133).

4: stn CP 236, 22°11’S, 167°15E, 495-550 m, 1 lv. Vanuatu. MUSORSTOM 8: stn DW 972, 19°22’S, 168°28’E, 487- Loyalty Ridge. VOLSMAR: stn DW 37, 22°23’S, 168°43’E, 500- 507, 1 dd; stn CP 984, 19°20’S, 169°26’E, 480-544 m, 1 dd.

DISTRIBUTION. — Southern Japan “in 150-200 m deep” (Tsuchiya 2000) and Natal, South Africa ( Kosuge 1992). Norfolk Ridge and Kermadec Islands, 465-756 m, live in 530-756 m (Marshall & Oliverio in prep.). New Caledonia, Loyalty Ridge and Vanuatu, live in 495-550 m, empty shells in 500-507 m. First record in southwest Pacific .

REMARKS. — Mipus matsumotoi is distinguished by its high spire and the absence of axial ribs on the last whorl.
