Etymology: The name rugipleuris refers to the rugulose sculpture of the mesopleuron.

Diagnosis: Ophion rugipleuris sp. nov. is probably most closely related to Ophion artemisiae Boie , but distinguished by the more rugulose central part of the mesopleuron, the more and the shape of the male parameres. The colour of the body is quite dark compared to most European Ophion species.

Description: Fore wing length 15‒17 mm. Body length 20‒21 mm. Antenna with 53‒57 flagellomeres. Head quite narrowed behind eyes, temple in lateral view 0.7 × as long as compound eye in female, 0.8 × in male ( Fig. 16D View FIGURE 16 ). Lateral ocellus touching inner margin of compound eye. Face quite narrow ( Fig. 16B View FIGURE 16 ). occipital carina centrally with a very distinct dorsal notch. Face below antennal sockets shagreened with distinct and very dense punctures. Malar space very narrow, about 0.1 × as long as mandibular base. Mandibular gape obtuse, with internal angles. First flagellomere 3.5 × as long as wide. Central flagellomeres stout, about 1.2 × as long as wide. Mesoscutum polished with very weak punctures. Mesopleuron shagreened with punctures quite dense, centrally with strong wave-like rugulose sculpture ( Fig. 16C View FIGURE 16 ). Epicnemial carina, in antero-ventral view, with pleurosternal angles very distinct, right-angled or slightly acute, slightly anterior to sternal angles. Scutellum with lateral carinae in basal 0.5. Propodeum dorsally polished with weak scarce punctures and the anterior and posterior transverse carina very strongly raised ( Fig. 16E View FIGURE 16 ), laterally with rugulose wave-like sculpture. Anterior transverse carina anteriorly often with two short parallel carinae centrally. Central longitudinal carinae strong, delimiting a slightly elongate area superomedia which often is open posteriorly. Lateral longitudinal carinae weak or missing ( Fig. 16E View FIGURE 16 ). Submetapleural carina strongly raised. Sclerotised part of first sternite ending level to spiracle. Hind trochantellus shorter than wide in dorsal view. Hind femur slender, about 7.0 × as long as wide. Inner spur of hind tibia long, about 0.5 × as long as hind metatarsus. Wing membrane infuscate. Ramellus distinct, reaching about 0.3 × the width of the discosubmarginal cell. Radius weakly sinuous. Nervellus broken below the middle by the discoidella.

Colouration: Body quite dark brownish-yellow ( Fig. 16A View FIGURE 16 ). Inner and outer eye margins yellow. Posterior metasomal segments infuscate, in male more obvious with segment 4 and onwards more or less darkened. Mandibular teeth black. Ovipositor sheath black. Wing veins black. Pterostigma dark brownish, apically and basally extensively black. Two males from Crete (Lassithi, Psycho (OÖLM)) with mesosoma largely infuscate.

Remarks: Johansson & Cederberg (2019), indicated that this species could be conspecific with Ophion pseudocostatus Meyer, 1935 (type lost) only known from the type female collected in Baýramaly in the eastern part of Turkmenistan in the Eastern Palaearctic. However, the original description (Meyer 1935) concludes that the species, which is smaller (body length 13‒15 mm), has the scutellum without lateral carinae and that the ramellus of the fore wing long, characters which cannot be attributed to the species here described. According to the molecular analysis closely related to Ophion borealis Johansson, 2019 , a species known from Northern Europe, Germany and Albania, with which it shares the almost straight anterior transverse carina of propodeum.
