Diagnosis. Wall with 24 radiating ribs; articular furrow of scutum shallow, narrow, limbus adductorum about one-third overall height; tergum moderately broad, external furrow open, spur with parallel sides, distal end truncated, depressor muscle crests extending to or barely beyond basal margin.

Type locality and host. H. M.S.` Siboga’ station 251, oV Kur Island, Moluccas, Banda Sea, 5ss28.4¾S, 132ss0.2¾E, 204 m, 8 December 1899, on Caryophyllia sp .

Type depository. Lectotype, ZooÈlogisch Museum, Amsterdam ( ZMA), Cirr. 100.324.

Remarks. Hoek (1913) based his description of this species on two specimens of which the sole extant specimen was redescribed and illustrated by Ross and Newman (2000 a). It was our restudy of this species that led to a re-evaluation of P. cancellatum and others which we now include in Pyrgoma .

The opercular plates of this species, originally believed to be`fused’ together ( Hoek, 1913), were readily separable upon soaking in sodium hypochlorite (commercial bleach; Ross and Newman, 2000 a). In addition, the morphology of the basis may not be completely obvious until similarly prepared.

The tergum is far broader than that of P. cancellatum (ratio of height to width 1.80 1), and it has well-developed depressor muscle crests. Also, the limbus adductorum of the scutum is shorter than in either P. cancellatum or P. japonica .
