Sathytes paulus Yin and Li , sp. nov.

Type material

Holotype. Male, labelled ‘ CHINA: Zhejiang Prov. / Qingliangfeng Mt. / Luminyougu / alt. 850 m / 20 July 2009 / FENG, YUAN and YIN leg.’.

Paratype. One male, same label data as holotype, but ‘Guanlizhan–Baibuling / alt. 1000 m / 15 July 2009 / YUAN and FENG leg .’.

Description

Male. Body ( Figure 1B ) reddish brown, mouthparts and tarsi lighter; BL 1.59–1.66. Head ( Figure 3G ) wider than long, HL 0.29–0.31, HW 0.37–0.38. Vertexal foveae moderately developed, posterior edge of foveae located slightly anterior to level of posterior margin of eyes; LE: LP = 2.67: 1. Eyes well-developed, large, strongly prominent, each comprises about 18 facets. Antennae with scapes thick and large; pedicels larger than antennomeres III, III–VI subequal in width, VII–VIII slightly wider than VI, subequal in width, IX–XI ( Figure 5A ) strongly clubbed; semi-membranous apophysis on antennomere IX as in Figure 7G ; antennomere X much wider than long, XI ( Figure 6E ) with two truncate basal protuberances, the more basal one covered with tufts of specialized setae at apex.

Pronotum about as long as wide, PL 0.37–0.38, PW 0.38–0.41. Elytra combined slightly wider than long, EL 0.50–0.51, EW 0.63–0.65. Abdomen slightly wider than long, AL 0.43–0.46, AW 0.55–0.57; tergite IV 2.7 times as long as next. Length of aedeagus ( Figure 8G ) 0.17.

Female. Unknown.

Habitat and distribution

Sifted from the mixed leaf litter of a broad-leaved forest. East China (Zhejiang).

Etymology

The specific name refers to the small body size.

Remarks

Within the group (see remarks under S. longwangshanus ), S. paulus is considered close to S. excavatus , S. clavalis , S. rarus , S. ibialis and S. wuyishanus by sharing a similar form of antennomere XI in the male. Identification of these species relies on a careful examination of the male antennal structure in fine slide preparations. Sathytes paulus may be separated by the apophysis of antennomere IX being short and located near middle, the aedeagus with a shallow apical notch and probably by the geographical distribution.
