Distribution. Tanaella propinquus has been reported from the American west coast from Santa Maria Basin in the north to Baja California in the south. Bathymetric range 59– 320 m.

Remarks. This species is fairly common in relatively shallow water and apparently not very selective with regards to substratum. The characteristics of this genus are: the biarticulated uropod endopod, the long cephalothorax, the flat pleotelson apex and the lack of pointed denticles on the cheliped fixed finger.
