Diagnosis. This species is very similar to T. lata superficially, and the differences are stated under the latter species. The forewing markings of T. emarginata also resemble those of T. pediformis , but the short streak present near the tornus of T. emarginata is absent in the latter. The male genitalia of T. emarginata are diagnosed by the valva emarginate at distal 1/3 of the ventral margin. The female genitalia could be confused with those of T. pediformis , but the anterior margin of sternum VIII is broadly U-shaped in T. emarginata whereas it is narrowly U-shaped in the latter species.

Description. Adult ( Fig. 19C View FIGURE 19 ). Wingspan 7.5−11.0 mm. Head glossy white. Labial palpus white, with segment I very short; segment III fuscous ventrally and apically, slightly longer than II. Antenna with scape glossy white; flagellum dark fuscous except basal 1/3 or 1/4 of dorsal surface white, male cilia as long as diameter. Thorax and tegula glossy white. Forewing glossy white or creamy white, anterior edge of costa black in basal 1/3 or 1/2, markings dark fuscous: a wedge-shaped costal streak from between distal 1/4 and 1/3 of wing, attenuated distally, obliquely running toward apex and nearly reaching apical spot, followed by and confluent with a shorter costal streak extended from distal 1/5; beyond this suffused with light brown scales before apex; apical spot round or elliptical, sometimes shortly extending along termen as a slender line, its inner margin slightly suffused with grey; a grey suffusion along dorsum from near base to 2/3, followed by an inwardly directed V-shaped marking, the upper fork of this nearly reaching apical spot and often confluent with costal streaks, the lower fork much shorter and running along fold; a short dark longitudinal streak near tornus, running almost in parallel with the lower fork of former marking but not reaching it; fringe on apical area creamy white with subterminal and terminal black bands, produced downwards and bifurcate; fringe on termen grey except basal half white, near apex with a row of coarse metallic fuscous ciliation; fringe on dorsum whitish grey. Hindwing grey except subapex white and apex black; fringe whitish grey except apical area white with a terminal black band. Legs white; fore coxa suffused with fuscous in anterior 2/3; fore femur, tibia and tarsus fuscous on outer surface; mid and hind tibiae with a short dark fuscous streak near apex, respectively; mid and hind tarsi with first tarsomere broadly dark fuscous at middle, II–III tarsomeres dark fuscous in basal half.

Abdominal segments ( Figs 27D View FIGURE 27 , 28B View FIGURE 28 ). In male, sternum VIII 1/5 length of abdomen; lateral margins deeply concave in basal 4/5, then convex posteriorly; posterior 1/3 bifurcate, inner margin of two tines forming a U-shape, somewhat pointed apically; tergum VIII sclerotized as a trapezoidal plate, bearing long coremata bilaterally and large petal-like scales mediolaterally. In female, posterior margin of tergum VII deeply concave in V-shape and shortly sclerotized, with a bundle of stiff scales.

Male genitalia ( Figs 42F View FIGURE 42 , 43H View FIGURE 43 ). Uncus broad, mitre-shaped. Gnathos hook long and very slender. Tegumen 1.5 times as long as uncus, with a median line near anterior margin. Valva broad, slightly curved outward distally; ventral margin broadly convex in basal 2/3, emarginate at 2/3, then bulged before apex; apex narrowed, truncate. Anellus lobe short, ditigate, sparsely setose. Juxta strongly convex medially, hummock-like. Vinculum simple, narrowed. Saccus very short and slender, elongate sub-triangular, rarely bifurcate apically. Aedeagus narrowing from base to apex, constricted at basal 2/5 and before apex, respectively, rounded at apex.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 59E View FIGURE 59 ). Papillae anales weakly sclerotized. Apophyses anteriores approximately 1/2 length of apophyses posteriores. Sternum VIII longer than tergum VIII, weakly sclerotized except anterior and posterior margins; anterior margin broadly U-shaped. Ostium bursae opening near anterior margin of sternum VIII. Ductus bursae narrowed in basal 1/3 or 2/5, then abruptly broadened, with a linear sclerite arising from base and reaching colliculum; colliculum situated near base, ductus seminalis arising from posterior 1/3 or 2/5. Corpus bursae elliptical, slightly longer than ductus bursae, rarely 3 times as long as ductus bursae; signum rounded, consisting of minute denticles, placed at posterior 2/5 or 1/3.

Distribution. China (Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Zhejiang).

Etymology. The species name is from Latin, emarginatus (emarginate), referring to the emarginate distal 1/3 of valva.

Remarks. The species name was suggested by Jialiang Zhang who previously studied Chinese Thiotricha in NKU.
